Default Comments on Site Banner

I know the new site banner has been up for a while. I must say I am disappointed with the outcome considering we were teased with better design options last year. I thought I could get use to it. I am thankful to the site owner and administrator to keeping it running. But I enjoyed the site alot and know for fact that it could be better. This comment might be negative but I try to be professional about it.

1. What happened to the winning design B) in thedesign contest? I couldn't find any followup thread after the poll was closed.

2. The placement of many links are unconventional (non-intuititive). The site path like "Forum > General Interest > Site Info" should be placed below the banner (just above the forum body), not above the banner. Because the path is specific to the current page, not a site level navigation link.

3. Having the search box tugged to the top-right corner is inconvenience. User needs to expand the browser window wide enough to see the text box. Search is what we encourge peoople to use often, and should be placed in a more convenient location, perhaps in-between the "Logged in As:" and PMs messages.

4. What happened to advanced search?

5. Within the banner, why place "Search | MyS2K" in the middle and away from main manu below it. The background panel also seems akward and out of place. The left edge isn't aligned to anything.

6. The font for main menu "Home | Forums | Gallery | Events | Clubs | Market" seems a bit too bold and wide. I would suggest to put divider "|" between them, use a little smaller font, and put a background panel underneath.

7. Good idea for changing graphic on the right-banner.

These are my 2cents.

If you want to take on the work of improving it send me a PM and I can give you guidance. Whatever the design it need to be functional and meet the branding requirements we have to maintain out distinct and well known identity (that means blue, PANTONE Reflex Blue specifically).

A public contest can't incorporate all of the branding or functional requirements. They are prototypical designs expessing a concept. What you get in practice often differs widely once you deal with the dirty details.
