Sounds like it might be IMAP - can you use POP instead?

It was a webmail bug exposed when I updated some software. There was a patch available so I applied it and all is well again

It's your for as long as you're a member. When you membership expires you don't lose it, you keep your email account so long as you renew within a reasonable amount of time
