Observations from down under
We think we have the situation at hand. The only thing left to do on the speed front is to replace the sidebar. It worked great when we had CSS2 but because people insist on using outdated browsers we can't use it. Removing the sidebar will allow the page to draw as it loads and therefore make it appear to load faster. As it is now, the whole page has to be loaded before you see anything but the header. That's why it looks like it's just sitting there.
