Default Post Whoring

Why does the forum tolerate post whores? I'm not talking about people whose comments are arguably pointless (that would be most of us...), I mean people who regularly post blank messages, or unhelpful smilies, or "IBTL," in order to jack up their post counts or occupy the "corners" or whatnot. These irrelevant posts consume bandwidth (for us and the site), and make it harder to find the information and opinions we're looking for. Why are they permitted?

Is it a money thing -- do the additional posts make the site look better to advertisers?

unfortunately, post count is often tied (usually falsely) with knowledge, seniority, or general bad-assness.

i agree with you though; for the most part it's just annoying.

Believe it or not people post whore as a social activity. We have a place for it in Off-Topic called The Corner. Whoring is not allowed anywhere else on the site. It occurs in local forums but it's up to the CO's of those communities to enforce a no whoring policy.

Much of s2ki is controlled by the communities, it's a shared responsibility to control the content but many communities prefer to set their own rules and we are unable to control that.

When I became a member on this site I didn't read anything that stated I had a certain number of posts I could post.

Like i said, whoring has it's place and is only a problem when valuable or serious threads are polluted. We've got a good and long standing arrangement with those who would whore to respect this idea and they have their very own forum to do it in.

Post whoring as is rule is prohibited everywhere except placed designated for it.
