What's with the stars above people's avatars again?

Why are some vendors listed as sponsors and why do some vendors have stars?

Not that I care about stars. Just curious about what they mean really.

I think there is a difference between Sponsors and Vendors, cthree will be able to say what the difference is. Suggest contacting him directly in email.

I'll report the missing *'s as a bug - I don't see any reason you shouldn't have them

The color designates a user status: guest (no stars), member, gold member, CO, mod, etc.
The number of stars tells you in what year of participation on this forum you are. eg. 4 stars means you are in your 4th year here.

I think vendors should get stars and make them green - you know, for the color of money?

what if you decide to join now, but your s2ki years are well over 3 years. will you get 3 stars or 1 star because you've just become a "paid" member?

no you get stars for your s2ki age, if you are a member.

I'm shocked that something as insignificant as stars would affect your decision to purchase membership or not

There are a number of group which "get stars" under their name:

Admins, Site Mods and Moderators - Blue
Community Organizers and Gold Members - Gold (or Yellow if you prefer)
Members - Red
Sponsors - Green

All users with stars regardless of color have one star for every year (or part therof) since they created their accounts on s2ki.com. If your S2KI age is 3 year, 140 days you will get 4 stars. In a couple of years I'm going to need to revisit this formula but that's what it is for now.

In addition there are two new groups associated with two new membership levels which will get stars:

Platinum Member - Platinum (or White if you like)
Life Member - Purple

These two new membership options haven't been formally annouced yet but will shortly.

The Vendor group, I'm afraid to say, is obsolete. Those with Vendor under their names will either migrate to Sponsor or Platinum Member depending on their situation. This will change in connection with sponsorship program changes which I will be sending out by email to all vendors, sponsors and prospects next week. These changes will occur on April 1.

You can't actually renew until it expires, unfortunately.

cthree will release details of the new memberships as soon as they are ready and available

From the looks of it, he has expired. He's just running on the grace period.
