Question Can't go topless anymore

Hey guys,

I'm a newbie to the S2K and I believe the failed attempts by my salesman to open the top when the latch was only partially opened or brought down (i.e. after pushing the button you pull the latch down but the hook is still attached) has lead to the plastic button breaking recently when I pressed it. Now I can't get the latch down to got topless

I was planning on going to Rick Case or Pompano Honda (whichever is closer) since according to your posts, are the better of the honda dealerships. I saw a post for MTS Automotive as well. I have a warranty and I wonder if it will cover the broken latch. Any thoughts??

BTW, looking forward to meeting you guys for the next meeting.

If your car is under warranty, go to the dealer. MTS Automotive is a repair shop. They do repairs and installs. They will not be the middle man for warranty repairs.

Thanks, I considered MTS as an option if the dealer wouldn't honor the warranty. I'll have to try and go next weekend. I can't make it today. Would be nice if this was something I could fix; however, I see no way to take the latch off to but the button back on and the button is broken anyways. I'm guessing this will be a beatufiul, top down weekend LOL.

Just use a rubber band to hold the latch in place until you get it repaired. If the dealer won't fix it, just buy a new latch and install it yourself.

I replaced mine.
- not covered by warranty
- the part is about $75
- about 2 minutes to replace
- saving the cost and hastle for the dealer to replace it - PRICELESS

It's just one or two screws. Real easy to do.

Thanks for all the input guys...I went to Pompano Honda since it was one of the more recommended dealers; however, the part was just under $100 dollars. I mentioned that I was a member of S2ki.com and that a discount was worked out there, but I guess the guy that would know about all that was not in on Sunday.

The problem was, I couldn't get the latch down to access the screws. I tried sticking a screwdriver in there to jimmy the latch open with no luck. Seth, in service put the part on for no charge. Really cool guy. They let me check out one of their employee's new Civic SI (really nice car).

I got an oil change though, and later that night, my maint. req. light came on I hope they didn't mess something up.

I have been happily topless since. I just gotta figure out what caused that idiot light to go on.

It was probably time for an oil change anyway. That light is supposed to be reset by the tech after each oil change, and will begin flashing after about 3,000 miles from the last time it was reset, signaling that it is time for your regular service.
to reset, turn car off, remove key. depress the trip button, and hold while inserting key and starting engine. Keep trip button depressed until the check engine light de-luminates (my word). VOILA!!

btw - if the trip button doesn't do the trick, try the same sequence with the other button. I always forget which one it is.

Penrod is Yoda!!

Thanks, I will check this out ASAP, all the fluids seem to be at optimal levels so that must have been it. One question, you might know, why is it when I take her close to red line and shift, she spits out smoke from the tail? I usually see it at night within the headlights of people I pull away from or pass.

That will typically happen when the oil has been topped off and taking a hard, gradual right turn. The oil allededly flows into the header through the 'overflow'. If you look, you can see a short rubber hose running from the engine to the air intake hose (I think that's where it is - It's been a while since I've looked at it).

The theory goes that the overfilled or topped off oil in the engine flows into the intake, the engine burns the oil with the fuel, and creates a GREAT smoke screen affect. I've had several people ask me if I blew my engine during an autocross because of this.

If you are getting smoke while driving in a straight line, I would think that is suspicious.

I hope that helps.

BTW thanks for the compliment.
Almost all of my knowledge on this car comes from this board. What a great place to learn!!
