An interesting study
http://www.apa.org/journals/psp/psp7761121.html
I read the whole thing, but the abstract does its job and gives you the meat of the matter.
I find this highly appropriate:
...the same incompetence that leads [people who lack the knowledge or wisdom to perform well] to make wrong choices also deprives them of the savvy necessary to recognize competence, be it their own or anyone else's.
One of my favorite snippets from the work:
One puzzling aspect of our results is how the incompetent fail, through life experience, to learn that they are unskilled. This is not a new puzzle. Sullivan, in 1953 , marveled at "the failure of learning which has left their capacity for fantastic, self-centered delusions so utterly unaffected by a life-long history of educative events"
In a nutshell:
We propose that those with limited knowledge in a domain suffer a dual burden: Not only do they reach mistaken conclusions and make regrettable errors, but their incompetence robs them of the ability to realize it.
VERY interesting study...

Ok, I have to ask... What are you doing reading the APA Journal?
The findings of this study are not suprising at all. Those with various shortcomings have often implemented defense mechanisms to protect their fragile id, ego, and superego. More so, they tend to dwell in the realm of mind altering substances. Then again, many are simply as ignorant as a door knob.

I especially enjoyed these:
" Incompetent individuals, compared with their more competent peers, will dramatically overestimate their ability and performance relative to objective criteria."
"One puzzling aspect of our results is how the incompetent fail, through life experience, to learn that they are unskilled."
Hmmm good point:
Thomas Jefferson once said, "he who knows best best knows how little he knows."

Sounds like an employee I fired some years ago...
me: "Sorry Carlos, working on outside projects during business hours using our equipment is not permitted. I personally seen you, others have seen you and I have computer records here as evidence. I have to terminate you."
Carlos the Fired Employee: "No, you're wrong, these other people are wrong and your computer records are all wrong! I am perfect!"
