Default New Cylinder Head??

Hey guys, i just heard back from the Honda dealer yesterday that they will need my car for another week. The CEL has been on for a couple of weeks and they were having trouble figuring out why. They tell me that after 4 days of tests and finally conferring with Honda's tech-line that the cylinder head needs to be replaced. "A one time deal under warranty, because this had to come from someone over-revving the engine." Now, the only trouble I've ever noted since the CEL came on was a slightly rough idle. I am thinking that if something were bent b/c of over-revving that it would show up at high speeds as well at idle. I have not really abused my car. Vtec'd lots of times, but not beyond what the car was designed. Also, they tell me that the tech-line guy claims our car does not have a rev limiter on it. i thought i read that until the car warms up all the way, it will prevent you from vtec'g. what do you all think? Are they FOS and just unable to come up with a better solution? Does their diagnosis sound right to anyone?

So are they replacing it under warranty for no charge?

Which dealer is the car at?

The car does have a rev limiter on it when accelerating, but not a mechanical one. This means when accelerating, the ECU will not let you rev past 9000RPM's. If you do the fuel cut kicks in. However you can still mechanically overrev the car by misshifting, like a 3rd to 2nd misshift at 9000RPMs. Doing so you are forcing the engine to rev to well beyond its limits.

mav,

it's at sherwood honda (delray) and yes under warranty, without charge. also, that's the rev limiter i was talking about. i was aware (from this website) that you could downshift yourself right out of an engine if your weren't careful. will i have to take it through another break in period after they are done replacing the cylinder head? honestly, i am not 100% sure what the hell it is!

i know that if you try to hit vtec or do anything harsh like that when the car isnt warmed up, it wont let you. It will stop at about 4k. I know bc this has happened to me before, but it was in South Carolina when it was very cold. so it might not happen here.

1) Wont VTEC when cold.

2) It has a rev-limiter.

3) Sherwood Honda sucks balls for service. Go to Pompano Honda or Rick Case.

Good thing is they are fixing it free. Bad thing is they are giving you shit. Honda doesnt seem to want to honor their warranty on this car. Its crazy. Even on the best motors stuff can break. They need to realize this and fix the stuff when it breaks without trying to blame the owner.

thanks keith. after they get it back to me, i may try one of the dealers you mentioned for further service. somehow, sherwood has made me feel guilty for something i had no control over and that ticks me off. not to mention that the guy they talked to at honda's tech-line seems to be clueless!

for those of you who care, i just got a call from the dealer who just finished installing a new cylinder head yesterday and....the CEL is still coming on! and the same codes are popping up.

bad news is i still do not have my car and they still don't know what is wrong. good news is i feel better about their accusations about me abusing my car.

maybe next week i will get to go to bb, if i am lucky!

My advice is to take your car from that dealer and take it to Rick Case before they mess it up even more. Maybe you should even give Rick Case Service a call... ask to speak to Eddie. Tell him Tommy referred you. He's very helpful.

Ask them what codes it is throwing. Then look up those codes here at s2ki.com I had my CEL come on suddenly in October with a rough/bouncing idle. From looking at threads on s2ki.com, symptoms pointed to a P1519 (or the Idle Air Control valve) Sure enough, this is what it was. I agree with Tommy - take it straight to Rick Case.
