Default Opinions on this lens

Does anyone have experience with the Nikon AF-S DX 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G VR
IF-ED Nikkon Zoom Lens? I am interested in purchasing this lense but there are a lot of mixed opinions on it. So I was wondering if anyone in these community had any experience with it

Friend of mine uses it a lot and loves it. There are some trade offs with a super zoom lens - there may be a loss of sharpness, chromatic aberration, etc at certain focal lengths. But, overall image quality will still be good and overall composition and lighting will dictate the quality of your photos. It's a very convenient lens to have IMO - switching out lenses all the time kind of sucks. You should also check out the Tamron 18-270mm.

What are you planning on shooting? Moving? Stationary? Lighting?

Josh, a Baller like you should shoot F4 or faster!

Personally, I wouldn't buy anything that does not have a fixed aperture. If you want to buy an "all in one" lens for family and trips then go for it, otherwise save your money and pick up an 80-200 F4 / 70-200 F2.8 if you want a telephoto, or a 17-35 F2.8 (what I use) / 18-55 F2.8 / 14mm (very wide) F2.8 for wide angles.

I also recommend fixed lenses (very sharp and very cheap) like the 50mm 1.4/1.8, 35mm, 20mm, 105mm.

I don't keep up with the camera world much so I don't know if there are better lenses out there now, but I doubt it.

The 18-200 lens is very good for 95% of anything you want to shoot. I've done parties and events with it as well as low light shooting with a flash. Its a great lens. Still very sharp, not much distortion unless you are at the extreme low end, but its tolerable. If you can only afford one decent lens, get this one. Plus its pretty compact and great if you can only take one lens.

Prime (fixed aperture) lenses are great if you need the light performance and what not. They are almost always sharper. You can get a 50 f:1.8 for $100 or so. I also have one of the best Nikkor lenses an 80-200 f:2.8 zoom and honestly, 95% of the time the 18-200 is fine for what a need. Plus that 80-200 zoom is HEAVY and big.

Also remember to read people's opinions on those forums with a grain of salt. Try and find a more neutral trusted source. Most of these sources like the 18-200mm.

Further proving that point was careful reading prompted me to acquire a Sigma 10-20mm lens for under $400 saving me nearly hundreds off the Nikkor which most concluded was no better.

That is what I am thinking a good all around lens. I have heard nothing but good things about this lens.

I have this lens.
Check this review http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18200.htm

For 80% or more this will be your best all around lens (specially if you hate change particular lens for particular shooting situation). This lens way better than "Kit" lenses. But remember that there is no perfect glass at all.
To complete your shooting needs probably you'll need wide angle and 50mm lens

If you want to break a bank definitely there are more fancy and sharper Nikkor lenses
