First off, not a group buy as we traditionally know it but I am suggesting as a local
chapter, those interested can pitch in (the amount determed by the total of
those interested) and we can all buy one Tazzo unit to exchange around while
testing our latest and greatest (hopefully) mods. Everything from headers, cams,
catbacks, intakes, etc. can be put down on the street to determine if they are
doing you good or harm.

The Tazzo is an accelerometer much more advanced than the more expensive and
less sophisticated GTech and compares favorably to the Vericom unit that most
automobile magazines use for testing. It is self-leveling and it's best feature is the ability to time your automobile between rpm points. IOW, it takes shifting completely out of the equation and generally eliminates driver input (shifting) from the times, which in the end, will give you better accuracy in determining what your mods are doing for you.

Check out the link and let me know what you think. I believe Joe has expressed
definite interest as of course, I. Something to consider fellas...not going into detail
but I know many of us like to A/B our mods against familiar friends. This is one
way to do it without running side by side and of course, dealing with the possible
consequences. Southern guys can choose their road of choice, northern owners
can do likewise. If you're not interested in challenging other automobile times
for that specific stretch of pavement, it is still a valuable tool to help you determine
if your new mod is worth what you paid for it.

In a nutshell, you can chart what your car will do from 3000 rpms to 8500 rpms
in 3rd gear. Do six runs, three in each direction. Throw out the best and worst,
average the rest. Install your header (for example), go back to the same stretch of
pavement and do it again (weather conditions as close as possible to the original
runs). Now...compare the results. To me, this is much more "real world" than
rollers. Some disagree but again, you're taking shifting totally out of the equation
here....something to consider. I figure with all the members we have, if we get
enough interest, individually it would be chump change and perhaps down the road
we can have a TAZZO day where everyone can meet in a certain location and have at it.
Sounds like some bragging rights are at stake here without having to resort to interstate hide and seek. Safe fun because we run 'em one at a time.
I'll keep the thread open for awhile to gauge interest. If you're in, I'll add you to
the list. I already have one of these units but my bro in Maine is using it now. I
would not buy a GTech Pro after using this. I owned the original GTech for years
and threw it away after buying the Tazzo two years ago.

Russ,

Escort/Passort is offering something called a G-Timer. Seems very similar. The better G-timer unit offers data logging. It also seems like Betronics is putting out the exact same piece as Escort in a slightly different package. When I tried to copy something from the Betronics G-Timer site it came up with a copywrite thing from escort.... Looks like the Bel unit can be had for under 170 with data logging.

Given you previous experience with these, could you take a look

Passport G-Timer

Beltronics FX G-Timer

Mitch, neither of those two units can measure time between rpm points (as I
see it from their sites). They are very much like the GTech Pro unit selling for
just over $229. The reason why the Tazzo has been selling so well is for that
reason alone. It takes shifting out of the equation (or at least provides that option)
so not only can you accomplish 0-60 and 1/4 mile runs, but you can time your
car from 30-90 in the same gear or from 2,000-8900 in say, 4th gear. It is a very
accurate representation of actual modification improvements. One sloppy shift
can result in a less than accurate representation of a performance mod, especially
if you're trying to chart intake and/or exhaust differences, where we are talking about
relatively small horsepower increases. A 5hp increase in power (in the 1/4-mile)
is akin to losing .1 second. Because shift consistency can have a margin of ..05
of a second, it would be difficult to determine just what kind of improvements
you're doing with a new intake if you have to modulate the clutch/accelerator
pedal AND shift THREE times during a 1/4 run. You could lose .1 of a second
just on shift inconsistencies.
Here's a comparison of the unit against other accelerometers.

Also, bear in mind
those two units need to leveled, the Tazzo does not. It also has a four-point
suction cup base which is MUCH better than a two-cup set-up. I can't tell you
how many times my original GTech would fall off the windshield due to vibration
from the high-revving F20C.
It also has temp calibration which the others do not. Very important.

I've checked out the latest contenders and still prefer the Tazzo because I think
the others are essentially better looking GTechs but they can't match the Tazzo
for practical use.
Now...can I pencil you in my friend?

Guys, as Mitch pointed out last night, Tazzo just reduced the price of their unit
by $10 so as it stands, we've got six members willing to contribute to an item that
cost $139.99. Shipping (ground) is free.
$23.50 fellas but we should try and get more interested. My goal was to get
at least 10 members, bringing things down to $15/each. It will be much more fun
the more people we have involved in this.
Enough with the dyno-duke outs. Let's see some REAL world results. I'd
like to have a mini-S2000 Olympics where we do some same gear 3000 to 8800
rpm run offs and a few other acceleration tests. With temperature compensation,
it should make for a fun summer of cat and mouse. I'm interested to see how the
4.57 and 4.77 guys compare in these type of same gear tests.
