IR lap timers
Looks great for the price! Should be enough if all you're worried about is laptime.
This is what I use:
Qstarz BT-Q1000eX GPS Lap Timer
The software allows me to analyze any point of any lap. I can see velocity, braking points, g-forces, etc. I usually set up 3 sectors and compare individual sector times when I try different driving lines for example.

why not a GPS lap timer instead? or an external GPS unit + an android app (alap, torque) or iphone app (harrys laptimer)

Bit more expensive, but gives you detailed data on your laps.
Emprum GPS 5hz module
Harry's Lap Timer for iOS
Get the module and then you can use the lap timer app which it self is pretty cheep.
Sure the IR lap timer is cheep, but as a tool to improve lap times this combo will help show you where you need to improve to make you faster for not that much more money. :thumb up:
As a side note to iPhone owners:
The iPhone has internal GPS but its far too slow of a resolution be accurate (1hz). You can pair this module with the phone to supersede the built in GPS radio to give you the accuracy needed at the track.
Be a baller and get both! I seriously doubt the GPS solution is very far off from actual times. somebody who has a good gps timer should setup the IR timer in the car too and see how accurate the GPS is.
