New S2000 Owner in Oakville
Hi Everyone
I just purchased my first S2000! Its a 2001 Silvertone in color with 137,000km on it. As far as I can tell totally stock. Even the head unit is the original.
A 20 year journey. I was considering purchasing the S2000 new in 2001 and still have the brochure from 2001.
I have owned a number of cars over the years. Here are some of the interesting ones: 1971 Fiat Spider 124, 1985 Toyota MR2, 1999 Acura Integra, 1999 Porsche Boxster, 2007 Honda Civic Si, 2012 Honda Civic Si, 2017 Mustang GT Convertible.
Super excited to start this journey with the 2001 S2000.
My plan for this car are to drive it and enjoy it this fall and over the winter do a few projects to brighten and maintain. As I mentioned the car is totally stock and my plan is to keep it that way as much as possible. Restore things that need it and ensure that it is properly maintained and can be enjoyed for many more years to come.
Looking forward to being part of this community.
The initial service items I am thinking are to replace all the fluids: transmission, coolant, brake fluid, diff.
I would super appreciate any advice you all would have about pro-active maintenance I should consider out of the gate and if you have any recommendations for a good mechanic/shop in the Oakville/Burlington area to have it serviced.

correct- zero all fluids.
Oil- quality 10w30 synthetic and check it regularly- plus, check the dip stick properly- look at both sides and the lower side is the proper level.
Coolant- only Honda coolant- its premixed. Look on this site for advice on the proper refill procedure. Change at year 10/15/20/25 etc.
Brake fluid- use your favourite Dot4
Clutch fluid- use your favourite Dot4. Also, get to the clutch pedal arm and clean the accessible plunger rod area under the dash. It will likely be gummed up with a gray sludge. You might as well adjust the clutch rod as well.
Diff Fluid- 75w110 synthetic (I use Amsoil severe gear).
Trans fluid- honda MTF is fine
Spec Valve adjustment and retainer check.
Consider seam welding your front upper control arms mount where they are spot welded to the frame, especially if you're doing track/autocross. It was a TSB back in the day.
Rear axle nut retorque s2ki.com style.
Install a clutch interlock bypass- it will make your car less idiot proof, but in time it'll become second nature to not use the clutch to start the car. Since these cars often sit for long periods of time, this will potentially save your engine from catastrophic failure. I've seen it happen.
If you're going to go tracking/autocross/Forced induction, then replace the original oil banjo bolts with the upgraded 4 hole.
Quality summer tires 200-340 UTQG. Leave the all seasons for your daily.
My advice is do your own maintenance- you'll learn more this way. I'm sure someone closer to you can recommend a trusted shop if you don't have the mechanical acumen or garage space- most Honda dealers these days just don't know enough about the subtleties of s2000 maintenance.
Welcome to the obsession...and when the border opens, come join us at the Dragon!

Thanks.
I knew the car was only driven occasionally and only in the summer months and had amassed about 125K kms.

I am a mentalist, however, when it comes to s2000 maintenance and YMMV.

If the car has sat for a period of time there will not be adequate lubrication initially so gradual wear to the thrust washer can occur and eventually fail. When they fail its game over.

Welcome! Wow. Very similar tastes. I owned a 86' MR2, 08' and 12' Civic Si, and a 17' Mustang GT lol.
