OT: Bargaining Technique
Hello allo.
I am planning to go to the Mini dealer on March 22nd, 2002 (this coming sat) and possibly look into getting one of these.
However, being a poor University student working @ minimum wage does not allow me to swipe my visa card and drive one away.
Since March 22nd is their launch date, they HAVE to have some kind of special deals on the Mini's. I was wondering what you guys do/say to get an even better deal when purchasing a car.
My idea was to bring my Chinese mom with me, who can haggle real good.

Yes, there is a waiting list. Last month I called, there was only 21 people on the list waiting for a Mini. The deposite or the waiting list doesn't even guarantee you a S or a Cooper.
It could be just the hype to get everyone excited - "Oh man, I gotta have one!" type of thing, or even the dealers could be exaggerating the stats, but hey, it could be true (which I do not doubt).
In relation to the S2000, the price was set FIRM which I found quite realistic since is an 'exotic car'. But is Mini an exotic car? Or will it be another Beetle Hype?
But knowing is the first year of production, I should expect the worst.
Thanks for giving me your honest opinion s2krob
29K worth the money?

With this new Mini as was the case with the VW bug, PT Cruiser, the nostalgia craze will make it impossible to get a "deal" if you've "gotta" have one now. You better not only bring your Chinese mom, but your Jewish grandad, your Scottish uncle, your Gypsy cousin and maybe even your Ukranian hedgehog 'cause you ain't gonna get one of these first issues for anywhere near list.
I know a guy who bought 2 for his business at list. He's going to use them to promote his 3M Scothcal film protectant. Are you some kind of automotive aftermarket retailer? Unless you are, you better get in line.

I don't get it. Why would people pay so much for such a non-pratical car?
People should geta Corolla S instead of the Mini S. At least people buying Toyota's don't have to wait in line!
I was kind of suprise to see the new face lift of the Corolla. It looks much more aggressive.
I think is a pretty good price for a VERY reliable car. Although sitting inside makes you feel like you are driving a boat (SUV's).
I want to re-live my good ol' days too. Just 3 years ago, I sold my 1976 Leyland Mini and I miss it dearly. Some people are just too extreme, they rather wait in line and get a car which they won't recieve in at least half a year (Like many crazy S2000 owners here). I guess is really hard to compete with people who have loads of cash to spend. After all, is a BMW!
The funny thing is that I remember bon2k put a deposite on his S2K. The dealer told him he won't get the car for atleast a few months. Next thing you know, the car was ready in 2 weeks and he wasn't prepared. Just like to share some interesting events.

I was at the official Mini launch party last night at the Guvernemnt nightclub.
There are 500 'launch' special editions available. I believe you can put money down for one of these. It comes with a couple of extra trim items. I might have more information on this later today.
The cars look great by the way, especially the Cooper S. I have the full price list as well, with all option lists.
I'll be back at my office at around 2pm if you want to check in then.

I'd imagine this year you would only be able to get the car at best for MSRP. Like xviper said its the "IT" car this year and that means its also a sellers market.
If you see one sitting on the lot for a while then you have a good chance of doing something special on it...but I don't think its going to be sitting around too long.
If it is call me and we'll go negotiate...I wanna try it at the Salamander
