Default question about moving from Chi to Can

Hi Everybody,

I might be getting a temporary relocation from Chicago to Vancouver. I know this is a Toronto forum but it was the closest I could find. Anyhow. I'll be working in Van for about 14 months. The question I have is what is involved in bringing a car from the states to Canada? My car is currently leased and my lease company won't honor it so I'll probably have to buy it. Will I have to register it in Canada and get a Canadian Drivers license? How about taxes?

Any other info about this or other helpful hints would be appreciated.

Yeah you'll have to pay somewhere between 200-400 in fees when you cross the border plus the GST (7%). Then add a couple things like DRLs (daytime running lights) to make it Canada-legal then do the RIV inspection at a local Automotive store like Canadian Tire (www.canadiantire.ca). Then when you register it here you'll pay PST (dunno what that is in BC, 8% in ON). And pay your first year's registration.

Then again you may not have to transfer it if you're here working on a contract, or going to school. I imagine they have some sort of way to deal with temporary cross-border situations since you aren't planning to stay and resell the car here.

Ask your insurance company and call the Ministry of Transportation in BC to find out what they say

There is a vancouver forum. Its under "pacific northwest". Your question is just as good asked here, but just to let you know in case you want to mingle with the vancouver s2k owners

Warn you though, that forum is very dead. Everyone in vancouver is too laid back to post
