winter experience with the plastic rear window
Hiya folks,
I was wondering what techniques or secrets or serious pains everyone has with the plastic rear window in the winter.
I plan on having the car available to drive only if I need it. I have access to my GF's car and can commute to work via transit so i should be able to avoid any really bad weather. I figure i have to invest in snowtires but am not convinced i need to drop 4k+ on a HT.
02's and 03's need not respond. Only the ol'school S2k's.

no pains really....other than don't use a brush to remove the snow or ice off the rear window - it will scratch instantly.....use a cotton towel or squeegee instead.
and don't try and put the roof up OR down if the plastic window is really cold (for whatever reason).

Nimesh, How about fogging???
It really hasnt been an issue for me so far.
I'm thinking that the car might heat fast enough to deal with any remaining snow. Plus, I almost never park outside anyways.

I went my first winter in Calgary with the plastic window. Hardtop was on order and didn't come till spring.
It will fog up easily but the interior defrost does work quite well and given many minutes, will take care of it. You would be better advised to take advantage of the power mirrors (but not when they are filled with ice and snow) and aim them so you can more or less see what the inside rear view mirror normally sees.
As Nimesh has already said, DO NOT use a snow brush on it or it will scratch very badly. However, that being said, I was able to polish the rear window to a near new condition using Maquiar's plastic polish and Plexus.
I would strongly suggest you put on a fresh static cling tint (available from Crappy Tire) and then brush away. Get the lowest tint possible (20%). Replace when it no longer sticks well. Look here:

I suggest you polish and clean up the window first before putting on the cling tint. If you continuously replace the tint (about once a year), you will most likely never need to polish it again. Just use Plexus between tint applications to keep it nice and shiney.
For heavy frost, use your gloved hand to scrape it. For heavy ice, tap the window all over and the ice will break and fall away.

Hey, who wants to organize a drive down to Hardtop Guy and get a few hardtops? I remember he said he'd come and meet us up in Buffalo if we had enough....can't beat the price if you want one...
