Jordan's Mods Thread

Alright guys, here is the good old LED dash I created. Basically the same quality of the DJ Qube dash, except it's way cheaper and you don't have to cut as much of your instrument cluster. Dimmer function still works and the pictures just don't do it justice. Basically think of your stock dash in the color of your standard blue LED. The first few pictures of the array exposed give you a good idea of the final color of the numbers. They aren't even remotely white as they appear in the final pictures. And the lines are all clear and concise just same as stock. For those of you that have seen my powdercoated shifter and valve cover. That's a good idea of the color blue that the dash is now. Let me know what you think. I have enough PCB's to make 7 more, although LED's will have to be ordered as needed. My board uses 100 Super Flux Blue LED's, then I modified the stock filter and added an additional filter that I created.

Nice! Think I'd like a more white color, but the work and design rock dude!

MM3Kwolik 10-05-2011 11:17 AM

Thanks Matt! I can do white, red, amber, green, blue, and violet and I can do separate sections different colors with a bit more work, I was also thinking I could do a color change with VTEC engagement, now that would cost more, because it would need dual color LED's but it's totally in the realm of possibility. I didn't do it because I thought it'd be too distracting.

nice work dude! looks super clean

MM3Kwolik 10-05-2011 11:24 AM

Thanks Jarrod! I think I'm going to work on one for the AP2 next, really it's no different except for the traces and locations of the LED's, I looked at an AP2 dash and AP2's will also use 100 LED's. Hopefully I'll get going on that sometime soon, I think Scott is wanting one for his. If anyone is interested in having one made for them you can just PM me and give me an idea of what color you would want. :tipwink:

 Looks great man! We'll have to get started on the ap2 cluster when we both have time. I haven't had a chance to call our vender for shocks because work has been hell lately (but should be able to before weeks end).

Sweet. We'll definitely have to get going on the AP2.

Also guys, be on the lookout for my AP1 LED tail light mod coming soon. I've got some pretty cool ideas to upgrade the AP1 tails.

You should just borrow me your spare AP1 tails to bake, this way I can get all the measurements necessary and do the taillight conversion we were talking about.

Sorry, covered up today. You can stop buy this weekend, but I'm in Westmoreland until we move. I work in Cool Springs daily so could be free other afternoons. We're in the house buying process so things are a little hectic right now.

I'll PM you my cell.

Let me know if you want me to make you one. It does take a little bit for the LED's to get here. But once I have them it's pretty quick and painless. I have enough PCB's ready to do 7 more clusters.

Just sent you a PM Jordan

MM3Kwolik 10-06-2011 07:31 AM

I'll check the PM in a second. I still wish I could get better pics of this....haha it looks so much whiter than it actually is. There is absolutely no trace of white in the dash. It really is right there on the level of quality as the DJ qube dash.

MM3Kwolik 10-06-2011 08:25 AM

I'm going to try taking my video camera out there today and tonight possibly and see if I can pick up the colors better with a video camera. I'll let you guys know how that works out. Coming soon will be the LED taillight mod and Matt and I will be working on under door courtesy lighting that comes on when the doors open and shuts off when they close.

Different color*

MM3Kwolik 10-06-2011 09:25 AM

Are you willing to gift the tails for the cause? lol

MM3Kwolik 10-06-2011 10:28 AM

Well I just ordered 500 more LED's, 200 Amber, and 300 White to be able to do the taillights. I should have some leftover to do either multiple sets or to do someone else's dash in white. We'll see just how many it'll take to do these taillights though. Either way, I know for a fact, they are going to look awesome!

Depending on when me and the wife are meeting with the Realtor tomorrow would determine when we could meet up. I'll have them in the trunk tomorrow. I work behind Buy Buy in Cool Springs so you could stop buy and pick them up tomorrow if you're in the area. I might leave work early depending on the realtor appointment.

That'd be good Lane. Just shoot me a text, I'm free basically all day.

I have a few ideas guys as to what I want to do with the tail lights. I will be posting up some VERY CRUDE drawings/depictions of my ideas and I think I'll go with whatever everyone likes best. So be looking out for that tonight! :tipwink:

Any option to do different colors at different RPM's, like at vtec? For example http://www.qube-engineering.com/Purc...Multicolor.jpg

MM3Kwolik 10-06-2011 11:00 AM

Yes, However it will require a custom filter which will cost just a little more than a standard color, but yes, I can make that happen for you buddy.

Doesn't work.....looks like complete butthole with the stock incandescent bulbs....hence the reason for my whole LED array. lol

Alright, I didn't bother doing mock ups for my other ideas because I think this is the best one and one that everyone will favor the most. So that being said, here is my lame quick mock up as to my idea for an AP1 tail light upgrade. The Right lens would stay the same, except the lighter red ring around the outside would be a ring of LED's that are on with the running lights, same for the red ring around the orange circle (the taillights will still look stock with things off, so it will still have a clear diffuser and won't give away whats really going on inside). The dark red would then illuminate when the brake lights come on. The orange circle with the white dots would be a mix of orange and white LED's. Naturally the orange will light with the turn signals/hazards, and the white will light with the reverse lights. This way regardless of whether it's the turn signal or the reverse lights, the whole circle will light up. I may have to come up with some sort of divider to separate the red ring from the orange and white, because it may get washed out, but that's fairly easy and straightforward to do. Let me know what you guys think! :tipwink:

dornon13 10-06-2011 12:50 PM

I would be interested in doing a cluster in white depending on the price I have always been interested in the cube setup but its just not worth that kind of money to me. Also, I could help you with some better photos of your product as well to show actual color, etc. I think there is a pretty good market for this if you can do it cheap enough.

MM3Kwolik 10-06-2011 01:00 PM

I can do it a lot cheaper than the DJ Qube ones, which is why I did it myself. If you want just a blank white, it would probably be right around 75$ and thats with me modifying your cluster and installing for you. I just need to make it a little worth my time, lol. It's a LOT of work to drill all the holes and solder everything. But PM me if you're serious about wanting one. I think what I'm going to do is for people that want them, I'm going to just charge them for the actual materials up front and then collect the balance upon installation.

I like this idea a lot! Would the red ring on the current turn signal be a running light and a brake light as well? I'm concerned it might look odd with red LED's shining through a red lens on the current brake light, and another red brake light shining through a white lens of the current reverse/turn signal.

They may look different in a not so good way.

lane_viper 10-07-2011 05:56 AM

Anyone ever thought of doing one of these? It's a UK/JDM AP2 cluster that would work in our AP1's. Kinda cool.

They may look different in a not so good way.

The red ring on the current turn/backup signal would only be a running light, so for normal driving, it would be off. Same goes for the red ring on the current brake light. And I don't think I'll be using red LED's for the brake light. I will be using white I think, but either way a red LED through a red filter is perfectly fine. It won't affect how they look. So during normal daylight operation, the tail will look somewhat stock, with the exception of the turn/reverse being mixed so the whole lens lights up. And when it's dark, you'll kinda get a dual red halo effect, and the only thing that will change when the brake lights come on is the center of the factory brake light will illuminate.

trich101 10-07-2011 02:44 PM

I saw the dash in person last night and it was amazing. Even light from side to side. Not the superbright blue, more light the indigo option from Qube, very easy to look at. A definite  .

Well guys, I got one board designed for the AP1 taillight upgrade. This is the board diagram/schematic for the red lens (stop lamp). Now time to get going on the reverse/turn signal board. These are clearly going to be a lot more work than the dash. Just the red lens alone has 92 LED's, just for one side, haha. It's all good though. I like what I'm doing.

MM3Kwolik 10-08-2011 06:46 PM

Hahaha, I'm ballparking somewhere around 380 LED's to do a set/pair of taillights. Though I do think they are going to look absolutely AWESOME.....the not so awesome part is that 380 LED's translates to 1520 holes to be hand drilled, and 1520 terminals to be soldered. No sweat though...haha I have no life....

MM3Kwolik 10-09-2011 06:07 AM

Looks kinda Complicated, but it's really not. Right now I have the ring and inner part sharing a ground which shouldn't be a big deal. And then I have two separate positives. One for the running light ring, and one for the actual brakes. Now as far as the other board is concerned, it's basically done, but after giving more thought, I think I may do away with the second red ring, because I think at night it would look awesome, but during the day if only the middle part of the clear lens lights with the turn signal, I think it may look broken or unfinished. I'm still not positive, the board is basically done for the initial idea, but I'm starting to think this second idea makes the most sense.

Gonna be awesome dude! You must have a real passion for this kind of stuff.. I have a bachelors in Mechanical Engineering and this makes me

Cant wait to see the results.

MM3Kwolik 10-10-2011 11:35 AM

Well I was never really an electrical engineer by trade, but when you're on a submarine you are required to know everyone else's job too, that way if poop hits the fan, someone can still steer the sub home safely. So I don't claim to know EVERYTHING about electrical engineering, and don't have a HUGE passion for it, but I do know a LOT about it and when an idea comes into my head, passion has a way of creeping in as well.

Clean04ap2 10-10-2011 12:29 PM

lol, yeah i can see where being in a sub... under water... its kinda important to know your shit!

I promise you, i know SEVERAL Electrical engineers that would look at your work and :ponder: :ponder:

keep up the good work man. looking forward to the results.

Arent the holes drilled in custom locations? I guess, if he sent them a template to go off it could maybe happen.

MM3Kwolik 10-11-2011 06:59 AM

It would cost more than it's worth to have them custom drilled since they aren't in a normal grid pattern. LED's are arched, and tighter in some places, making it cost more to have them custom drilled. It's just better for me to bite the bullet and do it myself. The only thing I could see making it a little faster is a drill press which I do not have. But oh well!

I has access to a magnetic one that may make it easier if we do some kind of "mod day" or something!

magnetic drill press? How's that work?

Th@n@tos 10-11-2011 10:03 AM

With electricity and metal

I'm still confused.... do you mean it mounts magnetically to a workbench or something?

Th@n@tos 10-11-2011 10:11 AM

Yes, the base of it is an electromagnet. You put it on the metal, flip the switch and you ain't movin' it. It has a handle, just like a drill press, to move up and down.

ahhh....makes more sense......only problem.....my workbench is wood..... hahaha.

Awe, no vice? :( That's usually what I mount it to.

MM3Kwolik 10-11-2011 11:23 AM

I do have a vice....though I usually work over in that shop for semi-major/major car repairs. I've been doing all my LED work out of my apartment....a little more convenient.

I'm definitely interested in getting a blue AP2 cluster! The problem is that I'm in Raleigh, NC.

Would it be possible to ship out my cluster to you, get the work done, and simply reinstall it when it gets back? Timeframe would most likely be next month.

Have to get my car/cluster over there for he (and I possibly) to build it before he has a working ap2 cluster template.

Hey Jordan: My car is down for the next month and I think Chris is wanting to come up there for his cluster, you want me to bring my cluster up there then?

MM3Kwolik 10-12-2011 07:52 AM

Yeah that's cool Scott. It really won't take me terribly long to get the AP2 board designed. It will take me all of 30 minutes to take your cluster out of your car (unless you want to bring it to me out already) Then it's just a matter of taking it apart and getting the measurements I need.

ofsalesmen- I could do the install in your cluster for you, provided you ship me your cluster. It will be a little bit before I have the AP2 board designed, but when I do, we can get you taken care of. PM me for pricing details as well as what color(s) you want.

interesting.

You been able to get the AP1 tails apart yet?
