another reason to Costco

[QUOTE]Building or Defensible Location: Costco warehouse

Attributes:
Concrete building with few windows, a huge parking area, flat roof. Since it sells food and other household supplies, seems like a good spot to hole up for a while. Also, has a gas station nearby for powering generators!

Pros:

I'm a track noob but I did hear that open face is best if your car is still equipped w/ airbags. I heard that if you wear full face and the airbag pops due to an accident it could add to the injury rather then help prevent.
SCCA pitched a technical advisory in `04 about cars with airbags, and the potential they could do hard to the head and neck of a driver wearing a full-faced.

That said, the counter is fire protection, in that an open faced helmet doesn't offer any.

You need to choose which option you want to protect more.

I'd want to be up top in the rafters - no way they're gonna get me up there.

I think that is a myth on the airbag thing. It was gone over in the R&C forum for a while.

I run a full faced. I have a rather nice Bell and my motorcycle helmet for a passanger that I always bring. Now I mostly do auto-x but IMO I would rather buy a new motorcycle helmet than a used one from someone I didn't know on CL. Besides sales will be had next year when the new 2010 rating comes into effect. Most will be heavily discounting the instock SA2005 certified helmets (since they are only good for another 5 years.
what did yours run new?

Also, what is the requirements right now for helmets?

The HJC motorcycle one was about $120 when I bought my first bike.

The Bell was somewhere around $400, but I guess it was considered break-up present from a past GF There is a picture of here on here if you look around hard enough

Rules depends on organization and what you are doing I would guess. SCCA for auto-x is pretty lientent in that they have to be DOT and within 2 certification issuing years. Cert is given every 5 years so this year 1995 stickered helmets are still good. I think if you road-race they might require a higher SA rating the auto-x. What are you going to do? How fast are you going to go? And the final thought is how much is your head worth?

Per 2009 SCCA Solo rulebook

4.3.1 Helmets
Helmets meeting the following standards must be worn while on
course: All helmets meeting the current or two immediately preceding
Snell Foundation standards (SA, K, or M), or SFI standards
31.1A, 31.2A, 41.1A, or 41.2A are acceptable. Helmets meeting
British spec BS6658-85 type A/FR are also acceptable.
For maximum protection, helmets must fit securely and should
provide adequate peripheral vision. The chin strap must be
securely fastened. Loaner helmets should be available to vehicle
occupants not having their own.

Well, i need one that will atleast work with the Mini Event at Nashville Speedway on the 10-11th. If I am getting a helmet now, i dont mind getting one that would be most widely accepted. So, i guess a higher rated one so I wont have issues at other events.
