Default My firewall software is getting hammered.

I don't know about you guys/gals but for the last week or so I had spend more time blocking intruders than having fun online. I get online and then right away I get at least 6 hits. In an hour I may get 30 to 40 hits.

Thank God for Blackice.

Is Blackice available online? No firewall here - guess I should get some protection, huh?

IMHO - Black Ice is a very mediocre product. If you're looking for a decent personal firewall I would use Zone Alarm from Zone Labs. My guess is that half of what you are seeing are simply ramdom port scans and false positives that are being reported by Black Ice. No biggie.

Free download at CNET

Let me second Zone Alarm. It's great and free for personal home use. It's kind of overkill for me since I have a hardware firewall, but at least it lets me know what programs are trying to access the internet behind my back. If you have a constant connection I wouldn't run without a firewall.

If you are using Broadband, I strongly suggest the LinkSys firewall/NAT box. Single port runs around 95 bucks (its hardware), and can plug directly into a hub and your cable modem. Its a very slick setup, and additionally allows for multiple PCs to use the same connection.

They also have a 4 port version for around 160 bucks. (100/10mb)

I agree with the Zone Alarm recommendation if you don't want to go with the hardware setup that Aaron mentioned. Plus, Zone Alarm is free.

I think everyone on Austin RR is getting hammered. Even my bud in Wichita, KS is getting hammered. He figured out that it's one of the RR servers on his network.

I think some server in RR caught Red Worm.

And yes Aaron, the Linksys is the shizzznit.

My friends here in Dallas with cable modem are getting hammered (they all run Zone Alarm.) I haven't seen a single blip over my DSL, however. Go figure.

I got over 240 hits on Zonealarm in one 16 hour period about three days ago in Little Rock. I think that the cable modem people all over are getting blasted more than others for some reason (I'm on a cable modem).
I think I'll look into the Linksys box too - that's good info. It will be especially handy if I can hook up the three computers in the house to the one cable modem. I've been trying to find a good way to do that for a long time. (Not a computer wizard, just a user!)
