S2000 Videos
The idea came up the other day of having a video get-together.... I've got several specifically on the S2000 that you may not have seen:

Best Motoring S2000 Special: a very rare 60 min special dedicated solely to the S2000. Lots of footage of the development cars on the Nurburgring track, on the Autobahn, and driving around Monaco. Very nice tribute to the car, and if you haven't been on a racetrack in your S2000, this will talk you into it. (VHS)

Honda Corp. Sales training: S2000 versus the competition. See the training Honda provides to it's dealer sales force (not that many of them actually take advantage of it...)! (VHS)

Best Motoring Oct 2000: S2000 vs. S2000 typeV vs. old and new Miata. Japanese, but specs and times are in English. Typical BM - they battle it out on the race track, etc. (VHS)
I've also got a lot of other fun videos:

The infamous "Rendezvous": flat out in a 911 thru the streets of Paris. Not staged - this is real and was done privately in one take! (VHS)

The even more infamous "Faszination on the Nurburgring": laps of the 'ring in a Ruf Turbo 911. In-car and helicopter video, with a special camera showing the clutch and heel/toeing in action. Astounding driving (but don't attempt it this way when you get over there! As you can see, I'm doing my homework preparing for a trip to Nurburgring!) This is an extremely rare tape. (VHS)

"Super Speedway": Mario's film about CART racing. The best racetrack footage ever, take right from the car. Narrated by Paul Newman. One of the best racing documentarys ever made. (VHS, DVD)

Two all-time racing classics: "LeMans" and "Grand Prix" (VHS)

"The Gumball Rally" - the true story of the original flat-out "sea to shing sea" Cannonball race across the country: New York to Long Beach. Not to be confused with the terrible - but officially sanctioned - film "Cannonball Run". This is a great film, very nearly all the "incidents" in it are true (van with a giant gas tank to make across the country without stopping, fake cops who go the distance with their siren blaring, corvette that crashes and splits in half, etc), the makers of the film were sued by Car & Driver magazine for not acknowledging their ownership of the original event. Names were all changed, but the basic story is true.

Several other Best Motorings - including the famous 0-300 KPH battle of the supercars (pre-S2000). BM has a very large U-shaped track specifically built for this type of testing, the middle of the "U" is severely banked while the front and back straights are flat. The Best Motoring tapes perfectly illustrate why the Japanese are far beyond us in the car craziness...

lots more!
I'd also bring some of my S2000 collectables: 2000 & 2001 press release packages, HyperRev S2000 special (more parts from Japan than you can imagine), and various sales brochures (including the Japanese brochure), etc. I think I've gotten almost everything possible that's been printed on the car...
Got any ideas for a location? We'd need as much of the local group as possible, an excellent large screen TV and sound system, and a host that doesn't mind a mess...

It wasn't easy getting these...

Best Motoring S2000 special - I picked it up in Japantown S.F. about a year ago. Roughly 50 bucks...

Best Motoring S2000 vS2000 - this is the regular monthly subscription issue, about 29.95. If you are not familiar with BM, it's a monthly car "magazine" from Japan - but is available solely on video. It's performance oriented, so there are always track tests and usually "battles" - face-offs of performance cars around a race track. They have a team of their own drivers, all of whom race in various series in Japan. Their lead driver also does contract test and development work for Honda - he is the driver of the development S2000 around the 'ring and thru Europe. He is very experienced, and very good at describing the synamic handling qualities of his test cars. BM makes C&D and Motor Trend television look like junk - they rarely do their testing so comprehensively.

Honda Sales Video - cost me an arm and a leg ($250) from a collector in California. Interesting, but not worth that much.
It's a good thing to develop a source for these BM videos - they are *very* worthwhile and addicting.. They have just recently become available w/ English subtitles, but it's best to pick up Japanese if you really want to get the full story.
I also have a couple of BM VCDs from Asia, but those aren't really very worthwhile - they only play in certain CD players and the video quality is not very good.
BTW, as seen on this BM video (#2 in the list above), the s2000 typeV is slower in every measurable test than the "regular" S2000. It's still faster by far than any Miata, but it wouldn't be a very worthwhile option. I can't see any point in it at all!
And, interestingly, on the same BM video, the new Miata with it's 16" tires is slower around the track and in the auto-x than the 1-yr older Miata with 15" wheels (and, alledgedly, less HP). Putting the 15" wheels on the newer Miata makes for the fastest Miata of the two (showing the benefit of it's chassis reinforcements), but not by much. IMHO, time for a new design!

This is an excellent idea. Those videos are priceless and I have wanted to watch the Best Motoring ones ever since I have seen a few clips of them.
I can also host at my house, I "only" have a 43" big screen and an average sound system. Chris has more space however if we have a big turnout.

Jeff - *hint hint* check the library of this site. =)
A lot of people forget this site is more than just a forum. Might find a few other goodies in there as well. And btw, I have a copy of Rendevous on the puter somewhere. Very cool vid.

If any of you were interested, I just got a new PowerMac with a DVD burner, so I could probably d/l most of the clips of S2000's on the net and burn them so they can be played in a standard DVD player...

not as much expensive as it is on the PC side ... but let not start a PC/Mac discussion here!
We've got more interesting things to talk about ...
I would be more interesting in trying to "rip" those videos on a DVD though, if the owner wouldn't mind of course. Not only to be able to make copy of those videos (everybody knows it's illegal of course!!) but because the quality would remain intact years after years (no matter how many times you watch them) ...
Just an idea ...
