An apartment in Houston, TX is approx. 900 sqft large, 85% of which is carpeted. The carpet is one third of an inch thick, and the padding unterneath is approx. one half inch. In the aprtment is a washing machine with a drum size of 12 gallons. Waterflow into the machine is approx. four gallons per minute.
The apartment's resident turns on the washing machine at 11:15 am on a Saturday morning and leaves to get his car washed (assume he owns an S2000). He returns home after two hours. Unbeknownst to him, the drain hose in the back of the machine has become unplugged and water has been leaking into the apartment the entire time since the drum was never filled to the level where the waterflow would be shut off.
(a) Calculate the total amount of water dispensed into the washing machine and subsequently into the apartment.
(b) Determine the amount of water that was absorbed by the carpet.
This is why I could never be mistaken as a Native American -- I leave footprints even inside my apartment...
All fixed today. New padding and carpet, leaking A/C fixed while they were at it, painted over some water spots... Sometimes renting vs. owning does have its advantages.
