Default Insurance, again...

So, I just got my new policy from Allstate and they, once again, increased my premium by 4%. Bastards.

Oddly enough, the premium for my RAV4 increased by over 5%. I guess that means the S2000 is a safer car?

I need to start shopping around again.

I just switched to USAA from State Farm and my rates dropped over $600 a year insuring two cars.

I was paying ~$1,150 every six months and now pay $820.

Not many companies can beat USAA on auto insurance and their service is great. The nice thing is that at the end of the year, if they have a good year, they'll distribute a dividend back to the members. I've been with them for about 11 years now -- since right before we got married -- they let me go on my wifes policy three months before we were married and gave us the married discount too. I rarely will even entertain quotes from other companies, as they always come back higher.

All totaled, we pay about $1400-1500 per year for insurance on the S2k and a 2005 Town and Country Limited (hey, watch the mini-van comments! I have 3 kids and a fourth on the way), after I factor in the YE dividend (which is generally $100 or more per year).

Ulrich, good luck on the quotes...I think I remember from past discussions that you havE/(HAD??) really decent rates before, so they're probably inching them up on you. Keep in mind that Harris County is one of the highest insurance rate counties.

I have USAA and love the rates but take note of the changes in coverage at your next renewal - they have changed coverage for medical costs related to an accident from 3 years to one year. Based on my conversation with a USAA rep this aligns them with most of the industry and largely accounts for why rates did not increase this year. On the plus side a rider is no longer required for installed electronics so your radar detector and sound sytem upgrades are covered for no extra charge.

Never hurts to shop around... at least the general price level in the industry has pretty much leveled off in lieu of increasing 20 - 30% plus like it was after the mold ordeal (yes I know homeowners not auto but benchmark rates of companies affect all lines of coverage).

In 6 months when you post how unhappy you are with your rates AGAIN give Travelers, USAA, Geico & State Farm a call. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I'd be happy to sell you a cheap policy but I don't handle personal lines anymore.
