Default Moving to Houston

Houstonians,

Nice to find a Houston sub-forum on s2ki. I currently live in Corpus Christi, but will be moving to Houston in the next few months. I've been lurking here for a long while eye-balling S2000s during my agonizingly long process of determining what my next daily driver / fun car will be. I’ve decided on a 2006+ and have been combing Craigslist, AutoTrader, etc. hoping to find one for around $15-17K. I’ve missed out on a couple good deals by a day or two, so I thought I'd ask everyone in here to keep an eye out for an average-to-higher mileage 2006+, preferably in Silverstone, Berlina or (longshot) GPW in the area. I'm obviously not looking for anything minty, since this will be a DD with occasional track days and auto-x, but the closer to stock, the better. I have cash if any of you are 2006+ owners and looking to make a change.

I’ll actually be in town this weekend scoping neighborhoods with my wife, playing some golf and watching the FSU-Miami game at BlackFinn American Grille Saturday night with the Houston Seminole Club and my old college buddies.

Anyway, thanks for your time, and I look forward to meeting some of you guys (and gals) at future local events. Here’s my email if somebody finds something: LJamesDickinson (at) yahoo (dot) com

-James

Welcome James,

Where in Corpus are you from? I am from Sinton if you have heard of it. Actually live a couple of miles from Blackfinn Grill in Houston now (although in Canada for work currently). Cool place to go in Midtown.

Make sure to check out Cars and Coffee for fun on the first Saturday of every month. Tons of cars if you haven't heard of it.

As far as S2000's, all I can say is keep doing what your doing. Check on the "cars for sale" thread in the classifieds forum. If your open to traveling a little to buy a car, I see a lot of nice ones on there. Check out the 05 models also. They are known for being a little more reliable and don't have the electronic throttle control.

Again, welcome to Houston.
Ben

Hi Ben,

I've been through Sinton a couple times but know nothing about it, except that wind turbines like to grow there. LOL! I noticed that you’re an Aggie, living in Houston, but working in Canada. I’d hazard a guess that, like me, you’re in the oil & gas industry. Am I right? What do I win?

I'm originally from San Antonio, but my wife and I both "grew up" in Florida. I currently live way back in the suburbs near Yorktown and Cimarron across from Kings Crossing, which is about as far away from downtown (where I work) that one can live in Corpus, and my commute is still only 20-25 minutes.

Being somewhat intolerant of long commutes, we'll definitely be living inside the loop and will be checking out townhomes in what we consider the semi-hip/fun neighborhoods like Midtown, Montrose, Washington-Memorial … anywhere in between downtown and the galleria area. We're excited about living within walking/biking distance of cool restaurants, cafés, bars, beer-gardens, and whatnot.

I’m very willing to travel for a good enough deal, but I’m hoping to find something before Thanksgiving because my schedule will be fairly hectic thereafter, reducing my ability to travel.

Anyway, I’m sure we’ll run into each other at a Cars & Coffee. The wifey loves Saturday morning coffee dates, so two birds, one stone.

Just something I came cross yesterday. Not your choice in color but its in your price range, stock, and its an '06. So I'm sure price could be knocked down and you have cash so even more better

We have a winner! haha. Offshore drilling to be exact. Hopefully I will be back for Cars & Coffee November because I cant wait to drive around with the top down.

You sound like you have the spots picked out for living in Houston. I live around Hermann Park (just north) so you should take a look around there. Close to Rice village, med center, downtown etc. Kind of an up and coming area.

Good luck with the S2000 search and hope to see you around.

Thanks, dinhs! I hadn't tried eBay classifieds, only eBay Motors. I may have to go check that one out this weekend. The color choices were actually imposed by my wife. We'll see if Suzuka floats her boat.

Ben, Hermann Park is already on my list. I play at that municiple golf course about a month ago. It'd definitely be nice for my wife to be so close to the med center. She's a nurse and I'm an onshore completions and production engineer. Offshore is an entirely different universe.

Hell just in oil and gas, upstream and downstream are two completely different cultures. I have been thinking about moving from the plant to the rig. A lot money to be had on upstream business

The good thing about working offshore is you only work 6 months a year and dont get any work calls when your off (and it pays well). The bad thing is your on a rig for 6 months haha. I don't work offshore but I have to travel for extended periods of time when rigs are worked on.
