Mark,

What is the Driver's Edge DE School drivers edge? Is this where one rides with a personal instructor and then he rides while the owner drives? How does one sign up and what is the average cost? Could we get a group together and get a discount? Since we have convertibles, and if we ever want to get involved in lapping events, does our front window area count as a roll bar to the officials?

I know, I know.... so many questions, but I'm very interested.

Thanks in advance.

Ivan

Hey, I don't see the North Texas S2ki autocross in that list! I went to another autocross after the one in mineral wells, it made me appreciate all those laps MUCH more...

Ivan, yeah, that's the basic gist of it. Beginners always have an instructor. The first session, the instructor drives to give you a sense of the track. Next, you drive and the instructor, well, instructs. Speeds are usually kept low. Once your instructor thinks you're good enough, he'll have one of the chief guys give you a check ride to make sure you're ready to drive on your own. The higher run groups don't get a check ride - we get instructors by request only.

I don't remember the cost of their events, Chris should be able to tell us that, but if we can get 10 members interested we can get a group discount - 10% off, I think.

Neither Texas World Speedway nor Motorsport Ranch have any issue with the S2000.

Driver's Edge has a website that lists their events and pricing:

http://www.thedriversedge.net/

I think Chris or Mark have been to most events. Many of the DE Instructors also participate in the John Eagle events and TWS (I noted that the John Eagle Day events are not shown ). I have always had good luck with the instructors, and I would recommend not being in a big hurry to get rid of them. They don't weigh that much and have helped me a lot.

Regards,

Al

I have confirmed with Drivers Edge that a 10% rebate exists for car clubs with ten participants or more. A special paddock or garage area can be provided and the group may be kept together. Banners for the club may be displayed and an off-site gathering, perhaps at the hotel, can be coordinated by DE.
I suspect the club would be responsible for gathering the funds if the 10% is actually returned to the club rather than each individual. If we go this way it is evident some planning is due on our part in exchange for the group discount. I can see the possibility of the club doing this but we would have to collect in advance with the knowledge that DE won't refund us for no-show.
I received this info in an e-mail some time ago. If anyone is aware of a policy change please post.
I must attend one or more of these events next year, maybe I'll have my car back by then...

As I mentioned to a few of you, I suspect JEH is not having events this year. I have also found that the PCA events are filled with members first so unless you are it can feel like flying stand-by.

The NASA organization is new so I cannot say much about them. I notice that their first two events are being held at the same time as TWS MSC so I don't know how that will work.

IMO the DriversEdge events are the best for the new drivers. Usually they have more than enough instructors, more corner workers, and a little tighter rules. I think they have 4 TWS and 2 MSR events this year. I think they are still charging $275 for one with discounts if you sign up for more. If your car has more than 10K miles on it they will require proof of inspection with a receipt (~$40). Drivers license and current insurance is required.

The TWS MSC (Motor Sports Club) is run slightly looser than DE.. there may be fewer instructors, fewer corner workers, etc. Normally they have fewer drivers so it is possible to get 30-35 minute sessions instead of the normal 20-25. Price is a little lower at $250 a weekend with discounts if you schedule more.

The MSC dates are: 2/2, 5/11, 8/3, 8/31, 10/12, and 12/14.

I plan 5 or 6 dates at TWS and maybe one at MSR but is depends upon budget. I for sure will sign up for MSC on 2/2 and DE on 3/16. You MUST make reservations in College station in advance when school is in.. I usually stay at the Manor House.

Everyone of these organizations seem to be ok with our roll hoops for DE. Loaner helmets are nasty so you do want to buy an SA helmet.

These things are great fun.

BTW, for those of you doing the budget for these here is what I have found

Mark/Al/Chris/Stefan..... Thanks for the information. Stefan, I checked out the Driver's Edge web site and it appears the 10pct discount is now an upfront discount and not a rebate for a group of 10 or more club members. http://www.thedriversedge.net/carclub.htm

I wonder if there is enough interest to get 10 or more S2000 members to participate. Maybe with the North Texas S2K Club and the Central Texas club we could get the required minimum. Something to consider and discuss at the next meeting!! I would like to try and participate in at least 1 or 2 of these events next year.

Does anyone know if any Texas S2K Club (as a group) has ever done one of these events?

If I understand correctly what you're asking, yes, this has happened. John Eagle Honda in Houston has sponsored four such events at TWS so far. Like Chris mentioned, the tight schedule might preclude some this year, but hopefully not. Lots of S2000s, lots of NSXs... Cheap, too - only $200.
