False Laser Warnings
I have the escort passport 8500 and been getting a lot of LASER alerts, so just wanted to see what's goin on. The LASER blares but no signs of a real threat (cop).
So it's either:
1. The area (dallas)
2. My radar is wacko and needs to be tuned
When you guys get laser (on any radar) do you spot a cop most of the time? I never see a cop in sight. K and KA works fine
Thanks... I'm thinking my radar is out of spec... may be a posting for Electronics.

Since I have owned my 8500 X50... I have had all of four laser alerts... two of them were generated by firetrucks approaching with lights/sirens on... and two were mysteries... I don't know if they were cops or not because I was not speeding at the time....
When I had my x50 i usually saw the cop. One even sat on the side and kept it on the whole time. The only reason we notice so much is because no matter how strong the signal is its always loud as hell. I dont think i got any false alarms with the x50 but alot of SUV blinkers set off the V1.
I had one lazer alert this year on my x50 (and it DOES get your attention). It was where Hwy 114exits to 121 going north. No cop in sight. And I was doing the speed limit or maybe 5 mph above.

yeah, it scares the crap outa me and my passenger, even w/ the top down, it's like 4 times louder than all other signals. I'm thinking its some kind of malfunction, i'll have to call escort/passport

I've had the same false alarm with both the the 8500 and the V1.
I get the false alarm from the Chevy TrailBlazer frequently. My 8500 was recently re-calibrated by the factory. The Escort and Valentine web sites list red neon as a probable culprit.
I found a few references to the problem with a quick search:
Laser False Alarms
1. Red neon, from stores and occasionally from brake lights of other cars (example: Chevy TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Olds Bravada and Buick Rainier), can imitate the characteristics of speed laser.
2. The electrical systems of some cars generate electromagnetic interferences, triggering laser alerts.
Possible solution: Try relocating detector within the interfering car; also, your dealer may have a factory fix.
3. Note that laser-equipped-cruise-control cars, like Infiniti FX series, Mercedes, would trigger laser warnings.
