Thumbs up iPhone/iPod Touch Question

This is for you iPhone /iPod Touch owners out there, I have a quick question. I have a usb jump drive that I use to carry my files around on (.doc, .xls, .mp3, .etc) and I've just about filled it up and will need to replace it. I'm also considering getting an iPod Touch and wondered if I can use it in place of a usb jump drive? I've never used an iPod of any kind so I have no clue if and how I can copy files to it. Does it show up as a drive in my "My Computer"? Any input would be appreciated. I have a PC if that matters.

Tans, I believe you had an iPhone at our lunch, IIRC. Feel free to chime in here, too!

TIA

i have an ipod touch, and from the factory, it does not show up in your "My Computer" as an external drive.

I believe (someone verify this) that you can make it (any ipod) work like an external drive to some extent, but i dont think it would be as effective as an USB, again not sure on the details.

do you want an ipod touch for sure? i used to have a creative muvo that was a dual purpose usb flash drive/mp3 player. I think there may be a handful of other ones out there that are similar...

sorry.not too much help..

Yeah, you can enable the iPhone to store files like a thumb drive.

@indopinoy - yeah, I want the iTouch (I know that isn't what it really is called but I like that name better) for the other apps, not just the mp3 playing ability.

@Elistan - Is that one of the benefits of jailbreaking? Can you elaborate?

Err, sorry, I was confused with my iPod shuffle. Apple does not support storing files on an iPhone of iPod touch - you have to go third party to enable that. Which I don't have any experience with, sorry.

BlackBerry and Blackjack will do what you are looking for, I have had both and used them both for that purpose. Other Windows Mobile phones can do it too, possibly Treo, don't have much experience with those though.

If you jailbreak an iphone, then and only then can you use it like a flash drive. I haven't done it, so I'm unsure if it works exactly the same way, but I know that jailbreaking will enable you to have file access on the phone.

@trentor: Will jailbreaking really be required once the 2.0 release comes out though?
