Speed/Law Enforcement
I was going up the road towards home this afternoon, and I saw a traffic cop in the median, but he was busy helping someone with something... I gunned it off the light with no tire squeal (I have yet to even chirp them). I took it to about 8K and shifted into 2nd. I guess I haven't realized how loud our cars are (even with stock exhaust), because it really got his attention! He gave me this looks like "I want to kick your hiney, but I can't because I'm busy with something else right now..." I waved and kept on trucking... Now, I never passed the official speed limit, but my question is, can they give you a ticket for what I did? I've heard of people getting ticketed for "excessive use of acceleration" but has anyone here actually received one? If so, how hard is it to fight? It's just an opinion, and I dunno how they could prove something like that.
Of course I know I opened the door to being pulled over, and if he didn't ticket me for that, I would have been ticketed for other stuff, like letting my drivers license expire over eight months ago...
Another question - if you don't renew your license, how long before they require me to re-take the driver's tests?

I dunno about all the license stuff, but I do know that they can ticket for "excessive display of power" or something like that. I figure that would be pretty hard to fight, since it seems like it would just be a judgement call... but if you have a good driving record, I'd expect that a judge would be willing to drop it.
BTW... even though the car is not that loud with the stock exhaust, the tone of any engine revving above 4K RPMs is noticeable. I'd expect it was the tone and not the volume that got his attention.

I think driving without a license is a moderately serious offense. Like they wouldn't let you drive your car home, I think.
As for the incident, I remember a friend getting a ticket for "excessive acceleration" or some similar thing when streetlight racing. A good rule of thumb is that they can ticket you for WTF they want if you piss them off. I have heard of squealing getting noise violations. I'm sure they can find a reason to ticket you if you are accelerating quickly even if you're not squealing or speeding. I would not try and find out!!!

Heh...
Well I can tell you that I was pulled over for speeding in the S already (only for 45 in a 35), but the cop let me go. He did notice I had an expired license, I just played dumb and he let me go on both.
The incident today, I knew he was unable to come after me, so I played with him a little, knowing he's be mad he couldn't drop what he was doing... I was extremely carefukl on the way back to the office though, i saw his bike parked outside a convenience store.
Funny thing is, when I went by the 1st time and he looked, I did this:

It is called exibition of speed!!!

In Garland it's called "exhibition of Acceleration" and carries a $175 fine. ( I got one in a bone stock Civic EX. (127 HP barely chirped the tires on a 1-2 shift) But I got nabbed. I wasn't speeding either. If the cops want to get you...they will. It takes them less than 10 minutes to give you a ticket. It'll take you all afternoon to get out of a BS ticket... Ever seen anyone get a ticket for having the "TEXAS" covered by the license plate frame?? I got a warning on that one.
What does "exhibition of acceleration" REALLY mean? For the love of humanity, if no one exhibited any acceleration, we'd all be sitting still just taking in the sun and admiring the scenery. Now then, what is "excessive"??? How on earth could a police officer prove this in front of a judge. No radar gun.. no instrument that can give hard quantitative numbers to indicate that you were in fact "excessive". Judgement call? As far as I can tell, a judgement call is the farthest thing from being an accurate measure.
afka;fkajkfjal; Sorry for the rant. This reminded me of an incident 2 years ago, where I was sitting at a red light on Beltline. After noticing that the lane ahead of me was blocked off, I had to gun it a bit to get ahead of the car in the neighboring lane. Ok, I just took it up to close to redline. I hit a maximum speed of 30mph when the speed limit was only 35mph. After passing the car, I ended up turning into Bally's a block down the road. After getting out of the car, this cop pulls up to me and says, "You're very lucky I didn't nail you by radar. You better slow down." What did I do wrong?? Oh, that's right. I took it up to 9Krpm to pass someone, and now I'm in danger of getting a ticket?
Again, my apologize for venting. This probably isn't the most appropriate place to be doing so. Time for a cold shower.
