Summer Tires in Winter
there has been a lot of tire discussion lately, i know, but i have one more question for everyone.
i currently have the RE090 Pole Position All Season tires on my car (daily driven). I put those on before winter last year. i like the wet grip and the dry traction is very confident.
my question to everyone is: if you use summer tires, how do you like them in the winter?
the description on summer tires says not to use when in near freezing temperatures. does this make them unusable for Texas winters?

Summer tires do well enough in DFW to be used year round. However, if there is an ice storm, stay home
When it's cold, just remember that you're on summer tires. Their grip level is significantly lowered in cool/cold temps. Don't drive like an ass, and you'll be fine.
thanks for the quick responses.
i drive quite a bit for work and i was heading to austin last week. i left my house at 5:30 am and it was chilly. i noticed a little more twitchyness on the road than usual. it's made me reevaluate the benefit of all season tires.

I've basically always run extreme performance summer tires on all my cars and it's not a problem unless there's ice. I've even driven the Lotus on A048 R-Comps for a very short distance at less than 30 mph.
Agree with other posters..... summer tires work quite well in winter until there is snow or slush. I have the OEM Bridgestones, and I drive rather spiritedly in the wet. But if there is sleet or snow in the forecast, leave the s2k home. Even with winter tires, I wouldn't be accelerating too much on corners!

i agree with what they said ^
but i have survived many bad weather days (ice, snow, sleet) in the S on non-extreme summer tires. I drove from fort worth to addison for 3 years in the S. Just drive carefully and no sudden movements and you'll be fine.

I've always used summer tires year round on my cars. Since I've owned the RX-8 we've had a couple of ice storms, and the car has worked "well enough" in icy conditions with the factory stability control on that I wasn't afraid to drive the car.
