Default Tire chunkers unite!

The pics posted below are of the drivers side rear tire, the damage shown is on the innermost tread block. The chunking is pretty severe it goes all the way down to the cords. Does anyone know what causes this to happen? It was only the one tire, all the others are fine...I am not sure if I was consistently hitting an uneven part of the pavement while spinning the tires possibly causing the damage or maybe some gravel? the chunking is all the way around the tire skipping only 2-3 treadblocks. Anyone have a clue?

I've had that happen to me... of course I was crawling up rocks... and my tread depth is 12/32"

my theory on how this happens (aside from manufacturer OOPS) is that the tire shifts onto itself pinching the tread seperating it...

this theory is just that.. not official.

I haven't seen many non r-compound tires do that on an autocross course. That usually happens with lot's of heat generated on a road course. It's just all that torque man...or maybe a problem with the tire.

My guess: tire defect exploited by your alignment. I wouldn't be surprised if your alignment has significantly less neg. camber on the driver's side tire.

It was aligned less than a month ago by Ruf Auto Centre and the specs are

LF RF
-1.27 camber -1.29 Camber
7.73 Caster 7.78 caster
.07 toe .06 Toe

Left rear Right rear
-.75 Camber -.74 Camber
-.06 Toe -.05 Toe

If you were racing on an oval, I would think it was just wear... but since this is the only tire that did it, I would be inclined to think defect as well as some others...
