Thumbs up Tire Question

First, I was looking at the Kumho 712 tires. I got a quote from Tire Rack and Discount Tire, and it seemed to be a pretty big difference between the two, making TR the obvious choice. Of course to save me on all the aggravation, I called DT to see if they'd match it. (BTW, they came within 10-15 bucks)

So just when I was almost sold on getting the Kumho 712's until I called Al at Discount Tire. He asked me why I wanted the 712s, I replied that price was a consideration and you guys seem to like them. He asked me if I had considered the Kumho ASX. (He had asked about my driving habits)

He said the ASX was a better tire as far as mileage because it had a firmer sidewall, just didn't have the cornering ability of the 712's. He didn't think it should matter since I dont track the car or drive hard on curves. Plus, there's a 30k warranty with the ASX, 0 mile warranty on the 712... (Prices between the 712s and ASXs are about 4 bucks, if i remember right).

So my questions for you guys:

1. Anyone have personal experience with the ASX?

2. What is the highest mileage anyone's gotten with 712s? or ASXs?

Now, remember, I am on the original S02s in the front and they have 32.5k miles on them - with some tread left. My tires last because I don't drive hard.

I may not see many responses tonight because i am about to go home, but please add input/opinions.

Thanks

I would reconsider on both of those tires. I have owned both... the 712's on my old Civic hatch and the ASX's on my old E36 Bmw.

Neither will even compare with the stock S02s. I know you said you don't drive hard, but I also know you didn't buy an S2000 to just poke around town.

If price is a concern, which it appears to be, I would recommend Yokohama ES 100's...

ES>712>ASX

IIRC, Gernby had the ASX's on his S2000. You might search his old post's or PM him. I cannot remember what his thoughts were.

Did you mean the Yokohama AVS ES100?

The ASX are worse than 712's as they're more of an all season tire. The 712's are ok for street driving if you don't drive like a lunatic around corners and try and launch your car all the time. They're decent in rain but the overall dry grip for autocross isn't that great.

My gf really wants to sell her set of kumho 712's and will let them go cheap if you want to PM me an offer. The fronts are probably stil 75%+ tread and the rears are probably 40% give or take. She can't afford a second set of track wheels/rcomps so she just wants to get some grippier street tires. Let me know if you're interested.

Seems like noone cares for the road noise these tires give off. The S2000 is already loud stock. Why would I make it louder? Or can you tell?

I've launched my car one time in the 12 months I've owned it and it was only a 4500 RPM launch.

Being that I can get brand new 712s for $61 bucks/ea... I can see myself paying anything more than say $35-$40 bucks/ea for tires with 75% tread.

I've street-driven, and even autocrossed, on 712s. I actually like them a lot. They have reasonable, but not especially high, grip. Coupled with a very progressive nature, they can be extremely fun on the street. They'll easily let you push things without suddenly snapping into incontrolability. They'll definitely let you know when you're approaching the limit. That limit just happens to be lower than the S02s, although not enough to matter on the street. All that considered, take price into account and they're an awesome tire.

EgoThreat can chime in on the ES100s, she used to run those. I do recall her saying she liked the 712s better though.

I have no ASX experience at all.
