It seems like the new popular thing is to put together kit carish supercars with V8 drivetrains from BMW (Ascari A10), Audi, AMG (Zonda F) etc. They all tend to be stupid fast, expensive, and for the most part ugly except the Zonda F I wouldn't mind running SS in one of those though

Not really a new thing. I think the ol' Mclaren F1 is a pretty good example. Supercars started out as kit cars at one point or another.

I'm not sure KIT car is the right name. A kit is a car in a box that you assemble yourself.

These are more homegrown supercars.

And just because a car is made of fiberglass or carbon fiber doesn't make it a kit obviously. Using another marque's engine doesn't either as both of these things happen all the time wtih "real" car manufacturers.

These are cottage industry car manufacturers like Lotus, and many others, were at one time.

I don't know what you're talking about. Lotus still is a cottage industry auto maker. I'm pretty sure my car was built by a bunch of beet farmers in a barn.
