Default 2nd gear

apologies if I explain this in strange terms but dont know much about engine technology, so I'll describe the problem best I can.
I've notice this before and it happened again this evening. Imagine - Long straight road ahead, no traffic so thought I'd see how fast I could take the car in as little time. In second gear it only seems to go to 7k revs then the engine almost judders to a halt and I'm forced to change into 3rd. It doesnt do this in any other gear easily taking it to 9k revs. As I have never had a 'performance' car before I'm still learning how to drive it. Is this usual for second gear as I thought you could redline it in any gear - not that I do! Can someone advise me please

You're not doing this whilst the engine is cold right? There's a rev limit of about 7000rpm whilst cold (although when cold you should be going noway near that anyway).

Also, check oil level as TangoVTEC says.

However, strange that it only affects 2nd, or is that just co-incidence as above?

Mmmm cold engine.... oh dear, my dad used to drum this into me to coax the engine until it had warmed up ..... well I'd just left the pub and was showing off a bit to my mate so oops yes it might have been that. I wont have damaged the engine will I as I've done this just twice before? I'll wait till engine is warm next time then try and see if it does it again. Thanks for your help x

You won't have damaged it, as that's what the limiter is for but it would send shivers through me doing this to an S2000!

High revving a cold engine is not good! Don't do it again! You should make sure the engine is fully warmed up before giving it the beans. Give it at least a few miles. Even when the temperature gauge is up to temp (water temp), the oil is still relatively cold.

Remind me never to buy a car from you...

How cold are we talking about?

How did it look on the engine temp gauge?

Give it at least ten minutes before going anywhere near 6000 RPM.

missmuffet - Just because you had your S serviced 3 weeks ago, it does not negate the need to check your oil. I know yours is an 04, but you really should check it every couple of weeks...it's good maintenance.

It's made me nearly sh1t myself when I have done this in the past. It really is quite a violent cut off.
