911 Drive
I was lucky enough to have a go in my mate's '03 911 C2S this afternoon. I have to say that as much as I love my S the 911 was a different class. Was a pleasure to drive, fantastically quick and got lots of admiring glances. Made a gorgeous noise and had effortless acceleration. The ton came up in the blink of an eye but felt nothing like it, it was all so easy, and it was a refreshing change to be able to hear your passenger at speed (maybe this could be a drawback when travelling with your other half).
Unfortunately, all of this comes at a price of about

Max power / speed isn't everything for me, no mattter how impressive it may be.
But I'd like to see Burnie push one hard

No comparison with the s though !! Its probably 3 to 4 times as expensive but is it 3 times quicker !!! Me thinks not .......

Intersting to see this thread - I test droce a 996 C2 the other week. Did this as a back to back with a Boxster S.
Before getting the S2000 a few years back had driven a standard Boxster and been disappointed. Had expected a Porsche to to special, but had been diappointed.
Anyway this time I drove the Boxster S first - summary was "really nice car, but not sure about the looks or the cost, especially against a S2000. It just wasn't special, a Porsche is supposed to be special".
The 911 however was something else. I had always heard that the drive needed to be experienced - it was great - the power, the sound, the feel - now "this is special!"
I had no intention of buying at that point, but had the salesman pushed a tad harder, I might have signed on the dotted line I was so smitten.
My conclusion though is the roof doesn't come off (let's face it the 911 cab looks naff), and that I wouldn't sacrifice the S2000 for it - so plan is keep the S2000 as main car for the next few years and then buy a 911 as well (most likely 2nd hand subject to finances at the time)

the only car I would swap the S2000 for after much umming and ahhring is the Ferrari 355....I'm addicted to revs now....unless it redlines at a minimum 8000rpm I'm simply not interested
