Default Accelerating on its own?

Hi Everyone.

I have not been on here for a long time as I have been very busy renovating a property. It annoys me I'm having to come back here because of a car problem rather than looking at the meets page or to search the for sale threads but it is what it is....

I have just had this problem occur for the second time in the last month. Basically my throttle seems to be getting stuck open.

I noticed it at first when slowing down for traffic lights when putting the car into neutral my revs were still sat at a comfortable 4.5k. When driving, the car accelerates up to this range in every gear without any input on the accelerator pedal. I look a right helmet when sat at traffic lights with my engine roaring.

The first time it happened was when coming home from work at 8am with snow and ice everywhere which was pretty terrifying.... I basically have to sit on the brake to keep the car from exceeding speed limits whilst the car is just trying to power onwards.

I haven't got a clue where to start as each time it has happened the car is fine once it has cooled down. But when it happens there seems to be no stopping it, I have to basically turn the car off at every junction/traffic light so I don't look like a boy racer or end up ploughing into the car in front.

I have had a quick search but haven't found anything too similar to what I've been experiencing so I thought I'd ask instead.

Cheers

How old is your car? (Cant see on mobi)

Early cars have a cable actuator, later dbw so i guess early and stuff needs lubing up

He is suggesting to apply lube to the throttle cable and throttle linkage.
It would be advisable to check the cable for any kinks and correct position, normally it will be held in several places, routed for smooth operation. It will be worthwhile having someone play with the go pedal whilst you look at the throttle linkage for operation, the spring should pull it shut smoothly.

When it happens, can you hook your toe under the throttle pedal and pull it to retract the rest of the cable? If so, the problem is likely to be with the cable or the throttle mechanism. Or possibly the pedal. To check whether it's the pedal, unhook the throttle cable at the engine end and check the pedal for free movement. Also check the throttle cam and cable for free movement whilst it's unhooked. You should be able to find your problem then.

AS above but also strip and clean out the throttle body and idle control valve,

That sucks man, and it is REALLY dangerous!
Need to fix this ASAP, I'll start by cleaning the ICV as suggested above!

This is a standard ECU right?

My AEM started doing it but that was because the offset vs target was all wrong.

Get a mate to look under the bonnet at the throttle while you press the pedal to the floor with the engine OFF. It should move smoothly as you press the pedal. The let go of the pedal. Make sure he sees the throttle in the engine bay return to where it was. If that is working ok - probably issue with the cable so you'll need to get on you hands and knees and look at how it is connected to the throttle pedal. Watch it while pressing the pedal with your hand. Look for it kinking or catching.
If the reves are sticking at a one 'speed' - likely to be a sticking cable which isn't sliding back with the pedal. It will sound like the revs are rising when you press the clutch but that is just the engine rpm increasing with no load.
If the revs are actually increasing as you drive along - i.e. rpm going up even with no pedal pressed - I've no idea as I cannot think what would cause that!!
As others have said - most likely sticky throttle cable getting stuck inside outer cable OR cable getting caught/kinked on something near the pedal.
Good luck - let us know how you get on and what you find!
In the meantime - don't drive it - if you have an accident - you will be liable I'd suspect
