Default Advice: Radar detectors

After Saturday's meet and meeting so many of you with radar detectors this morning not knowing to much about any of them I contacted Intranetics asking for some advice on what products do what, below is their reply:

For detection of the truvelo (digital) cameras you would need a GPS unit.

I have the RA and a Bell 550.
RA is good, but must be kept upto date.
Bell is great and it does pick up the Lazers ( as proven on the M25 when passing 3 old bill at an accident, shame there no mute as the police could clearly here lazer being shouted out)
If you remove all the bloked freq like i have you do get false alarms from garages etc, but i can live with that, rather get a warning than some points

I fitted my S6-R Neo yesteday after seeing StevenM's install at the midland meet.

I too have switched off the radar detection as it appears to detect K band almost constantly! The only down point in switching off the radar is that it won't tell you which gatsos are live! Still - I think I'd prefer to slow down for all of them just in case!

It only took me about an hour to fit as well - considering I don't "do" working on cars, I was impressed with myself!

I just feel obliged to point out that a GPS unit doesn't 'detect' anything and it's dangerous to think of them in those terms. GPS units just respond to all KNOWN threats by comparing their database of threats with your current location. It can only respond to threats which have been programmed into it, which is why it is vital to regularly check for updates.

AFAIAA there is no device (available to the motoring public anyway) which can 'detect' TRUVELO which works from wires buried beneath the road surface and emits no detectable signals. A GPS unit will 'know' of the location of such devices only if the location has been programmed into it.

I agree with Simmo - Bel500 + Road Angel seems to be the best bet for me.
Local plod here uses temporary Gatsos a lot - especially on the A338 and Verwood access road.

Does anyone know how widespread TRUVELO devices are ? Do Dorset Police use them yet ?

I'vr just added a Bel 550 to my Road Angel. Good combination. Very satisfying when they both warn you at the same time of a camera you wouldn't have noticed.

The Combination does sound good although expensive, also where do you mount them both? Anyone have photos of both devices fitted to the car?
