Default Alpine help needed!

Ok, so I've got to the stage of investigating ICE upgrades.
Being a simple fella, I like to do simple things, so I thought I'd be a sheep and follow the Alpine crowd.
Seriously, it seems that the Alpine option is the one that is most compatible with the S, and I've only heard good things about it.

Ok, so my requirements are:

1) mp3 player
2) options for extra speakers at a later stage
3) possibly a simple SatNav option on the head unit (not on a screen)
4) possibly a CD/mp3? changer

I've looked on the mcs direct website (Thanks to MT for pointing me there), and I've seen what's available for mp3 players:

http://www.mcs-direct.co.uk/acatalog/MCS_D...CT_MP3_103.html

Questions:

a) Will a CD changer be compatible with an mp3 head unit (I'm assuming it will); and if I want one, do I need to get a head unit with 'CD changer control'?

b) What is a 4V pre-out and is it good to have lots?

c) Is a 4x60W good, and what does it mean?

d) Is Bass Engine plus better than Bass engine pro, and what are they?

e) What is DAB opt?

f) are there any satnav options with an mp3 player? ( I can't see any on the mcs-direct site)

g) Is there any point in a remote control?

h) What's Fantomface, AI net, and CD text?

Lots of stupid questions, thanks for reading, and look forward to responses.

Hey SAN

Cant speak for the crowd but what I got makes me smile.

Alpine INAN333R Sat Nav single DIN
JL Audio TR600CXis (you would want the components as mines an MY00 ive got the co-ax's)
Alpine changer
JL audio amp in the boot

Total cost about 1800 - 1900

sounds

a) Will a CD changer be compatible with an mp3 head unit (I'm assuming it will); and if I want one, do I need to get a head unit with 'CD changer control'?

If you want SAT NAV and MP3 then the INAN333R will play MP3's as long as you buy the MP3 CD Changer

b) What is a 4V pre-out and is it good to have lots?

Cable outs to AMPS / SUBS

c) Is a 4x60W good, and what does it mean?

4 speakers 60 watts (supposedly tells you how loud it is) not really important if you buy a separate amp.

d) Is Bass Engine plus better than Bass engine pro, and what are they?

More Bass and Pro more bass (same thing fancier name)

e) What is DAB opt?

Abilityu to add a Digital Audio B? tuner

f) are there any satnav options with an mp3 player? ( I can't see any on the mcs-direct site)

No but the INAN333R with the optional MP3 playing CD Changer will do the job

g) Is there any point in a remote control?

Nope

h) What's Fantomface, AI net, and CD text?

Fantomface (one minute you see it next minute its gone) AI net Alpines name for connecting bits of Alpine stuff together, CD text is being able to view the text from your CDS on the HU

Hi Ron,

Thanks for the quick response buddy!

What are these JL components; I assume the amp is a sub-woofer combo?
Whats the other? (didn't quite understand the bit about me needing some components)

Do I need either of these things, and how much does the rest cost without the JL bits?

San

The 600 CXis are my speakers they are coaxials so single speaker two drivers tweeter and mid in one. cos you have the MYYounger you need components which are two separate spaekers per side Mid / bass in the bottom part of the door and tweeter in the top part of the door.

I dont have a sub just a single amp to drive the two door speakers.

The Alpine sat nav single din with a CD changer costs between 1200 and 1600 depending on where you buy. If you want to play MP3's then you would need the MP3 CD changer ALP-CHAS634.

Some info wrt changers and MP3 playback.

Unless you get one of the really cheap head units, they pretty much all control a changer. The MP3 changer can be controlled by a non-MP3 head unit - it will still display MP3 track info and playback the MP3s.

Just a follow up point about Preouts and voltage.

As said Preouts are the connectors that go from a Head Unit to a Amp.
Most head units have 2 volt preouts better units have 4 or 5 volt, The Rockford headunit i have in my Mini has 8 volts!

Higher is better as it means the gains on the amp can be set lower and less interfeance will be present.
Think of the line to the amp and a water pipe if the pipes half full then there room for interference to sit alongside. If its full (higher voltage) then there is less room for interference to get in.
It also means that the volume can got higher without Clipping acuring this is when the single goes in to a Square wave instead of a nice curve.
