Default Alternative tyre sizes

So I've decided I'm going to put a semi slick on the car. Was looking at the Yoko's but by god they're expensive (and not easy to come by).

I've been recommended the Federal 595RSR by a very reliable source, but they don't seem to do a 245/40 width. They have 235/40, 235/45 and 255/40.

Would I be able to run the 255/40 safely?

Thanks

I've just put the Federals on my S.

The rears I've fitted are 255/40/17 and the fronts are 225/45/17

I did consider the 235's for the rear, but their load rating isn't high enough for the S.

Federals do run wide. The fronts look like 235's and the rears look like 265's when fitted!

I haven't used them on track yet, but they feel grippy on the road and don't rub.

You could put 215's on the front. They have a deeper tread than the 225's do.

Is it for track use Sound Wave?

IMO it would be Yoko or R888. I'm about to switch to Dunlop D03G (regulations!) which looks very similar to A048 but harder in compound.

If it's just a few track days i'd not look any further than AD08.

255 on the OEM 8.5" wheel would be ok in my book.

I would prefer yoko's, but the Federals can be found for ~£96 each front and rear!

Federals data sheet says the 255's standard rim width is 9" but can be fitted on 8.5" to 10" rims.

The car will go on track Mark, but not mega often. My trouble at the weekend on our run was that I was worried that the tyres would let go. I was going to run AD08's to overcome this, but the price is ridiculous for what they will be used for. (I can get 4rsr's for £480!!)

The person who suggested the RSR I trust implicitly, so the brand isn't in contention, only the size.

You won't find any ad08s anymore either now

I'd go for 225 front and 255 rears

They might not like standing water and cold as much as the ad08 though which you'd need to be careful off when summer is over

IMO you almost always get what you pay for and tyres can be an expensive one! What are you using now that you worried would let go?

AD08 aren't cheap, but they last a long time. As do A048. Bonus of an AD08 is that you can use it all weather, where an A048 has almost zero water clearing ability.

For a road car I think they are overkill as you end up doing silly speeds to get the car to move around.

I've not tried Federal so can't comment, but I'd be Interested to hear your thoughts (vs another semi slick)

But back to the original Q, 255 will be fine.

The car has FK452's on the back and Michelin Pilots on the front.
They may be fine for grip, and it's probably a psychosomatic thing, but if I know I have decent tyres, I'll be able to put my faith in them.

Get the Toyo R1R's Andy. From here, good price:

http://www.tyretraders.com/tyreInfor...R1787WR1R.html for the 215's.

And here:

http://www.tyretraders.com/tyreInfor...R1791WR1R.html for the 245's

was literally looking to make a thread based on this earlier today, got sidetracked with packing for a holiday,

i did a trackday at angelsey on saturday, and loads and loads of people were running and raving about the federal 595 rsr's and also saying that they come up a size bigger, so if you wanted to keep it roughly stock they were saying go for the 235's on the rear, i was thinking if the rears come up a size bigger then a 255 is going to be asking a lot for the 8.5?

but yes, i was looking at the toyo r1r's as well, but they are a bit short on tread even new, 6.5mm vs around 8mm for almost everything else?
