Do they not run through a CAN BUS system? Hope they don't as I want to hook mine up to the carPC.

I've not got round to checking the back of the panel for connections yet

As I put a AEM gauge in mine I had to cut through the board inside for it to fit in place so I was going to try and make up my own control board to work with my unit but I need to know the pin layout of the plug

Or :

Pin 1 - Mute out
Pin 2 - V+ for mute function
Pin 3 - 12V +
Pin 4 - To dash light controller
Pin 5 - 0V
Pin 6 - Audio Control (vol+-, chan, mode)

I take it you mean buy alternative aftermarket switches Stu? Must admit that concept has crossed my mind as I've always wondered why such a large Mode button was used that doesn't toggle (control stick fashion - left, right, up, down). Be interesting to see if anyone has applied this principal to perhaps the Modifry unit where you can perform additional functions using the existing controls (on some head units) by pressing more than one function button.
All possible but may need some additional circuitry ??

yeah mate as my switches cannot work now as i have had to remove the circute board inside for the AFR dial to fit in is it posisble to buy some buttons/switches and wire them upto the original loom and hide them under the dash in reach of the driver the main one i really require is volume control

Stu - when running through this thread again I noted garyo's link which holds the key. It's been a while since I've dabbled in the electronics world although you could measure the resistance from the OEM switch when held in the + and - position then replicate this with your own components. If you were to buy a rocker switch from RS/ Maplin/ wherever then I assume some soldering of the resistors will be required.
I'm sure some bright spark (excuse the pun) on here will be able to provide better guidance though.
