Push the bonnet release catch so the cable is pushed back through to the bonnet catch itself

Yup done this and it just feels slack ?? it feels like its either no longer attached or the latch is not pulling it back ? the bonnet is currently stuck open , maybe the spring is broken or something as the cable wont get pulled back ? any ideas ?

I think the only spring in the system is built in to the bonnet catch, is it well greased?

If the catch itself is stuck the cable will hang slack and it won't catch the bonnet pin.

Try to work it loose with something sharp and a bit of wd40 to clean it will do the job. (for a couple of weeks and then you'd have to do it all again )

Grab the cable where it comes out of the latch and give a gentle tug. Springs a bit iffy in mine these days and struggles to pull the latch back and this seems to work
