totally What are they going to do to all the millions of cars that will already be on the road with out the "brain"?

Are the car manufacturers going to let the UK dictate what safety systems are fitted globally?! Unless there is global legislation and Blair gets his muppets in line this will never work!

Even the principle of the idea is flawed - how can it be safer to have electronics remotely modulate a vehicle's speed according to an arbitrary speed limit that possibly bears no relationship to the physical conditions and environment surrounding that vehicle?

I watched a (boring that I am) programme about military applications the other day where the opposite principle was being applied. Here, the thinking was that the electronics would take care off all the "mundane tasks" leaving the human to - quote - "do what humans do best" [make decisions].

Another thing I read the other day is that solder containing lead is going to be banned (for "environmental" reasons naturally!), except for military applications where reliability is paramount.

Funny how "civvy street" gets all the sh!t ain't it

PS I feel quite strongly about this subject having nearly lost my son to this sort of thinking when his restricted moped could not accelerate fast enough to get out of the way of a 7 ton truck bearing down on him. He was in a coma for a while with broken limbs and thankfully survived. I decided to take it philosophically (and not to get back on two wheels myself and buy that Fireblade!) but I can understand how people end up campaigning on these issues - I was nearly there myself once!

Surely a speed over ride will reduce driver concentrations levels. People would just drive with their accelerator "on" and let the over ride take care of speed - then they'd fail to control their speed according to the situation.

Again, this doesn't appreciate the difference between speeding and excessive speed

of course we forget the guy/group who has invented this technology is never going to be 100% satisfied with his/hers/their life so on this note blue prints will fall into the wrong hands and before we know it it will be back to the old speed cameras and speed detectors scenario. i.e. someone will find a friggin way round it, removing it, jumper wire etc etc...

I can't ever see this coming to fruition. Like somebody said earlier, people will just stop buying new cars. Or manufacturers will just stop selling cars in this country. And what will the Govt do about imported cars?

too with the point about reduced concentration while in 'control' of the car, I think the roads will be a far more dangerous place in this Big Brother type vision of the 'future'.

Just my 2p.

Nasty story Mikdys, sure most people wouldn't think of that Glad he is ok though .

I wouldn't have thought it would take long for someone to work out how to 'tamper' with the brain anyway. I'm surprised they don't somehow use satelites to track our speeds. When we started using the Tom Tom - made me a bit nervous about the fact that our location/speed is so easy to track

Agree with whoever said they can't see the government doing it, where would their money come from then, sounds like they are just trying to appease the public that they are doing something
