Default Brake problems

We left the car in a secure car park at Heathrow for a couple of weeks; on our return the brake discs were badly corroded. In fact when we drove off it sounded like we had a puncture which considering how packed the boot was gave me a right turn. The good news was all four tyres fully inflated, the bad was when braking the car juddered very badly. Drove back to North Linc

The discs on my various cars have always looked badly rusted when the car has been parked with the discs hot and in damp weather - sometimes alarmingly! However, looks are deceiving. A couple of sharp brake applications and the pads soon sweep the rust away.

Bad juddering can be the pads sticking in their runners due to rust or dust, or by the discs being warped. It will be interesting to hear what your garage says - but I am always suspicious of those incidents where the garage has a choice -

a) say it needs new discs =

Graham,

I've had a similar problem of my discs corroding from time to time but not to the same extent. I have gone to drive my car several times recently and found that the rear brakes appear to be 'stuck' on. The car normally hasn't been driven for several days and the discs appear look a very rusty colour. To overcome the problem I've had to 'rev' the car considerably to unstick them (normally followed by a horrible clunking noise).

I figured this was because I was applying the handbrake to wet discs so parked the car without the handbrake: result = same problem.

It's not occurring every time and doesn't seem to be serious, but is rather annoying. I'm also making sure that I run the car for a couple of miles after washing it to reduce the corrosion caused after washing and not drying the discs.

I hope you get your new discs soon. I think Pete had a similar problem getting discs at the end of last year. Is this a general supply problem Honda UK have?

It's more than likely just your rear pads sticking to your rear discs. I personally would not put the handbrake on if the car was going to stand for a couple of weeks, especially if the roads were damp, just leave it in gear (except on a hill!).

As for rust, if you wash your car and don't take it out for a couple of days the discs will show signs of rusting, and the brakes will probably feel poor. Just give them a few hard braking stabs and they should come out fine.

If the juddering is very bad it may be warped discs, but if they were alright when you left the car and not when you picked it up, it sounds unlikely.

My brakes often are a bit 'stuck' if the car hasn't been driven for a couple of days. I find it un-sticks best if I go backwards first.

I would recommend the same as the others here - a few decent brake applications should remove the rust. If it doesn't try, getting the rotors skimmed it's a lot cheaper than new ones.

My brake discs have had rust appearing on them just one day after a rain shower. After a couple of miles they're nice and shiny again with no ill effects it seems: braking performance isn't affected.

I'm just a little disappointed that the regular brake calipers are so anonymous and finished in such a dirty-looking colour. A little 'Honda' raised lettering showing milled metal would have been nice, or even a paint finish.

As my car was often not driven for a while, I had to be careful when washing it then garaging it without driving otherwise the first time I drove it again the brakes pads would stick.

Usually it wasn't too bad, but one time the car sounded really bad - I thought the brakes were knackered. I checked for debris first then decided to go and give them some abuse. After a few miles of twisties they were alomst back to normal. Still looked a bit brown but were no longer sticking.

I now leave the car in gear with the handbrake off when parking on a level surface. I also take the car for a quick run after washing it before sticking it in the garage. Seems to be fine now.

I have just come back from a 6 week holiday and my brakes were very rusted and made a really bad sound. Not to worry, normally if you drive the car for a few miles they should clear and the S was no different. Within 15 minutes my brakes were performing as new again. You need to jab at them fairly hard at times and repeat the procedure. This is not a peculiar trait on the S.

I have driven over 200 miles, and there is a improvment but the problem is the pads are low at the front, Why the dealer did not change them at the last recent service will be my first question, the second will be why do I have to wait over a week for pads
ps had a Porsche that had been three times round the clock could leave for 12 months and it would start first time and drive home with no brake problems I rest my case
