Default Brake Squealing & Maybe Knocking?

Hi Guys,

So I have a small problem which has been ongoing for a number of weeks now. I had my discs and pads replaced, Pagid, and shortly after having them installed they started squealing. I don't mean a small squeal, I mean it was immensely loud and embarrassing to drive. I took the car back to the garage and they used what I think was a heavy grade of sandpaper to rub down both the discs and pads. The problem came back when I was halfway home, but not as loud. Next the pads were replaced, again with Pagid, and it went back to being loud squealing again. Today I have had the pads replaced with Ferodos and although the problem is still there the squeal is not as loud as the previous times. To add to this there is now a knocking noise happening when the road becomes a bit bumpy/slightly uneven. If I apply some pressure on the brake pedal the knocking won't happen, so I assume it could be the brakes making the knocking noise? (the knocking only started after the Ferodos were installed).

The squeal only happens at low speeds/coming to a stand still.

I have tried a combination of light braking for the first 20miles or so and gradually increasing the brake pressure. My attempt at a bedding in process.

When I was still on Pagid pads I was told to try some heavy braking, which I did. This made the noise go away until the brakes returned to normal temperature, some few mins later. I have not tried this with the Ferodos yet.

Can anyone offer up any ideas or suggestions?

Cheers all

Tonksy

Shims and copperslip for the squealing.

As for the rattling, I suspect they have not fitted the rear pads correctly. There is a slot on the calliper piston that needs to be correctly aligned.

Thanks for the reply lovegroova.

I saw them apply copper grease but not sure what the shims look like so can't comment. I presume copperslip is the same as the grease?

If your suggestions fix my problem I'll A) owe you a pint, and B) be rather displeased with the garage seeing as I have been there every week for 4 weeks on the trot now. Costing me a bloody fortune in petrol.

Which garage? No need to travel long distances to get brakes fitted.

Shims are thin metal plates that affix to the back of (OEM) pads to stop the squealing. I re-use mine with my non-Honda pads, but I suspect that the garage you used threw them away.

Have a look at the diagram here, shims are number 3

DMS have been pretty good in my experience.

Knocking on brakes can be caused by a few things. Poorly designed pads that fit very loosely in the caliper bracket being one of the main culprits. The pad can be so loose that it knocks back and forth when you go over a bump or if you brake. I have had this with pads on my old integra type r.

You also have anti rattle shims fitted to the caliper and caliper bracket and the idea of these is to prevent these knocking noise.

As for squeal this varies massively from pad to pad. My carbotechs can be fine one day and the next day make the loudest squeal you can imagine. If i was a pedestrian i would be tapping on the window and saying "mate your brakes are on the wear indicators" I have copper slipped these, shimmed them and done everything that normally prevents squeal and no joy! It doesnt bother me too much aslong as they work on track!

You can take brakes to any decent garage and they will be able to take a look. Im sure a member nearby whos handy with a spanner can help you out. They really are pretty straight forward to work on.

Oh and regarding the decat, you will always get problems with decats unless you use a spacer on the O2 sensor or buy an invidia or something similar that has a built in engine light fix. What type of design is your decat? a straight through pipe with a O2 sensor boss welded on it? If so thats your problem the secondary O2 sensor isnt seeing any change in oxygen readings

Yeah his problem is a little bit rare, we have fitted Pagid to many S2000 and it doesn't make many noise. And also the DS2500 on many as well.

So far we have fitted 2 sets of Pagid and one set of Ferodo DS2500 on his and the problem is still going. And on the 2nd set of Pagid we even had to paid for them at our own cost and fitted for him all free of charge and also the Ferodo DS2500 again we only charged him the different between the Pagid and Ferodo. And as you may know, 2nd hand brake pads are not refundable...so we have 2 sets of Pagids sitting here for nothing.

As you guys know, we been fitted brake on S2000 and many cars for many years and this is not something we don't know what to do. I think this is one of the most basic job for anyone or garage to do. It is something almost impossible to mess up.

I would suggest some hard braking bed in technic on the new DS2500 pad, it might be just some old Pagid pad deposit still sitting on the disk so the pad is not sitting evenly on the disk. The noise can only come from the pad not the disk. So I think the noise should be gone after a good bed in. It is the same with the Dixcel brake we sell, it might some noise when they are new and normally go away after some heavy braking when the pad sit evenly on the disk.

Maybe the discs are the problem
