Default Broken Retainers

Hi,

A bit quiet here this morning, just browsing around. Found this thread 'Under the Hood' about Broken Retainers.

Can someone explain to me what they are and what do?

Also, I can't seem to see the difference between the first and second pic, first being not broken (guy thinks) and second broken?

Cheers,

What Billman is saying is that is a LOT hard to spot a broken one then he tought it was. You need to see it on the spring to get any idea!.

Reading the thread, both of them have cracked, but one of them has a hairline crack. Hence the difficultly in seeing the difference!

Its the top one that looks to have a hairline though.

They hold the valve springs onto the valves.

They stop the valves dropping into your cylinders.

Both right!

The springs have to be very strong, to stop valve bounce @ 9K.

Unfortunately, the retainers ain't strong enough & fatigue.

I wonder if the retainers are cryo-treated? I suspect not. Would be a good extra safety measure?
