I get a feel for how flat the battery is by deactiviating the alarm from as far away as possible. If you can only unlock the car from 10 feet, it's time to change that battery.

If you are having problems, don't keep plipping. Let the battery recover for a few minutes, then plip from point blank range (I guess the best place is probably at the base of the windscreen - anyone know where the actual receiver is?). This has worked for me with the S2000.

Another tip is to keep a little screwdriver with your spare battery - you may have that shiny new battery, but installing it is another matter.

What a crap alarm, and to think that Honda charge us a non-optional 500 quid for it...

The Clifford on my Prelude, apart from being cheaper, having a water-resistant snap-open plipper case, and a boot release that works sensibly, has a pin code mobiliser in case your plipper doesn't work.

So it's not just my car that decides for itself whether it'll remotely open the boot today or not....

CT - thanks for the warning. I'm not sure if I have the same remote - but I find the door opening has a much longer range than the boot - you have to be almost next to the boot to make it work. I have also stood by the car blipping away on the button to close the doors - nothing happening and almost about to walk away to buy a battery - only to find the passenger door has not being closed properly. On other cars - you get a lock attempt by the remote - but the doors unlock so you here it and know that one door is not closed - this one does not do anything.

I was caught out by this when I had my RS, so I always change my battery every six months, just as a precaution. They cost only

Kobe: If you're remote has 3 buttons - lock/unlock/boot then it's the standard central locking remote. Honda UK fit a (crap) CAT 1 alarm as standard to UK cars - comes with a 2 button remote. So you have to hold down, or plip repeatedly on the unlock button and if it's in the mood the boor will pop

I had a thought about that Pete, do the MY00 cars have the boot opener inside the glove box? If not then the OEM solenoid setup that the alarm ties into to release the boot won't be there.

You should also ask about them fitting the top-down cut-off for the ultrasonics - stop a repeat of the alarm prob's you had at the Abinger meet, I think the kit costs about

I wouldn't be surprised mind you; the rear wind protector thing was mounted backwards when I got the car. I'd had it three weeks before I realised it was supposed to fold back and mine wouldn't!

brian - I have 2 button one - unlock and lock is one button and the other is for the boot, but no CAT1 also!! figure that for standardization.

When I bought my car, Honda did not even have any security system at all - even as an option or accessory. For 2002 they have now got a system which works by sounding the horn if after locking the door with the remote you try to use the key to open it - obviously with a dead battery in the remote you are going to be in the S***.

The other stupid thing - they only give one remote!!!! The only bonus is I got a nice S2000 key with a nice badge on it.
