Default CD jammed in Head Unit

My 9833 head unit has been playing up for a while, particularly with some el cheapo CDRs I bought. Anyway, I now have one seemingly stuck in the head unit.

It plays ok and I've tried the suggestions in the manual for pressing eject again once the faceplate is open, as well as doing a reset, all to no avail.

Is it worth taking it to a shop for repair, or is it worth simply getting a new HU as the problem is very likely to reoccur?

PS. please don't suggest an iPod HU as I don't and won't own one. Probably looking at a 9887R as a replacement.

New H/U me thinks, you need.

Not worth repairing, as like most modern eletricial items, they are design to be replaced, as a posed to being repaired.

Probably warped CD. People often forget how much heat those lasers produce. So a cheap cd + a few hours playing time...
If i were you i would open up the unit and see if i can remove the cd that way before buying a new unit. Good luck.

I doubt that a 5mW laser would be able to heat up a disc on it's own. More likely to be the rotational enery transferred to the disc from the motor (which itself is probably generating a reasonable amount of heat).

My head unit regularly cooks itself if I have the roof down in cold weather. It's right above the gearbox (and as we all know the tunnel gets pretty hot), and below the heater outlet for the roof down setting.

I doubt lasers or rotational energy are to blame.

Simon, it doesn't have a small hole you can poke a paper clip into does it? All CD drives used to have those, once upon a time.

A few years ago i started to install some linux distro. Got called away and frankly forgot about it. Anyway the disk must have had some reading problems somewhere to the point that one couldn't even call it warped but nearly melted

Thanks Ian, how long did that take? Was it in or out of warranty at the time? Mine's pretty old now.

I can't remember to be honest, give them a ring and ask. There will be a quick way to release a stuck CD, i am pretty sure

Groova, is it coming up with an Error number? E001/E002 means the CD mechanism is jammed and it has to be sent to Alpine. I am about to send my 333R back to alpine for the same reason!

Shouldn't be more than around
