Default Central locking problems.

Yes I have done a search.

2001 UK car picked up 2 months ago. When we got it the passenger side door did not open with the remote on unlocking - no problem, driver's arms are long enough.

Yesterday the driver's door wouldn't open either and there was just a whirring noise from within the door. This happened with the second plipper as well. The boot continues to open magnificently.

Is this an easy fix? I don't wish to trouble the dealer unnecessarily.

I'm guessing that one of the solenoids inside the doors is stuck...if you whip off the door cards, you can manually try and move the solenoids (there will be rods attached to it) whichever one does not move in/out will cause your problem to occur, and will need replacing.

Sounds like both soleniods may be fubar'd or, possibly the operating rods have become detached.?

Here's hoping it is the cheap option (yeah right...).
