It can.

By using direct injection technology. But the injectors are a tad unreliable at the moment. (diesel contains a shot of lubricating oil).

That's before variable valve timing control is perfected, which several companies are working on.

Well I don't think he's too happy - got a text from him a while ago
The loan car won't start and he was waiting for someone to come and sort it out for him (they'd better take some money off the service for that!!!)
