Question Clutch alignment tool

Hi all,
iv decided to go DIY as regards changing the clutch in my car.
took the old one out and there was a piece of metal floating around in it,there is like small metal ribs underneath the friction disc and it was one of them that broke off.It effected the car by making it difficult to shift into gears, but im guessing now thats because my clutche wasnt fully engaging.I thought my gearbox was wrecked so im somewhat relieved.
So far everything has gone good,as regards the procedure for removing the clutch, but as this is the first time to change a clutch in any car, iv hit a stump in the manual where it says i need to use a clutch alignment tool and remover handle, are these really necessary or is there any alternative to using these??
All hints and tips are welcome

Yeah hats off to the write up rislar. Was just a little unsure to how you aligned it,So by eye or feel with a straight edge or somethin is good enough yeah??Unfortunatly i dont have the luxury of a lift, but ill manage none the less.
Go and check my valve clearance then

I bought one and it wasn't needed. I just felt round the edge when tightening the pressure plate.

It's a 1/2mm "lip" of overlap on the friction plate. Just feel it on the edges to make it centred and slowly do the bolts up.

In the 'old days' we used a socket extension bar and socket.
A luxury would be a busted gearbox you could extract the input shaft from for free at a breakers
