Default Clutch problems

My S2k is a MY00 with 72.5k on the clock and original clutch.

These are my syptoms:

1. Shifting is progressively getting worse (over the past few months), the gearbox is very notchy and I almost have to put the clutch in then wait for a second and then shift.

2. Spotted a bit of oil around the master cylinder piston, which was black! (but none on the carpet so it can't be leaking much).

I'm guessing it's the master cylinder that needs replacing but can anyone confirm or have any other ideas?

my CMC (clutch master cylinder) weeped and left evidence marks on the sound proofing immediately below it.
fluid would also drop slowly over many months.

i also had inconsistant clutch behavour. sometimes the shift would catch and grind when going into the next gear, and when in stop/start traffic, the bite point would vary. the more times i used it, the lower the bite point got to the floor.

changed the CMC (used one from ebay), and i've not noticed any issues at all since.

the clutch was changed about 8k before changing the CMC, so i knew it wasnt that.

Yes it does sound similar with the gear sometimes crunching slightly but i haven't really noticed the biting point changing, i will keep an eye out for that now though

Not sure to be honest because i've got used to it how it is. Although, when i press the pedal the first inch doesn't seem to have any resistance if thats what you mean?

Could also be the slave cylinder of course.

Have you checked the clutch fork for grease?

It could be the slave cylinder but because the master is leaking and from what i've read it's more likely to be the master. Thats's my thinking behind it.

I haven't been under it to have a look yet but i will check it all out, including the ball joint

I just remembered another symptom:

3. Loud squeeking when engaging/ disengaging the clutch, sounds like it's coming from the master cylinder because it can be heard inside and out.

Not sure if that's any help or not but thought i would mention it anyway

First thing to try would be bleeding the clutch fluid, Only going to cost you a fiver in fluid and half hour of your time. My pedel had a lot of dead travel at the top, fluid was mucky. Took a while to bleed it all through and a massive air bubble came out in the end. Like a new clutch now and gearchange much improved because the clutch is able to engage and disengage correctly.

I've got exactly the same symptom as you have described... I'll get the clutch fluid changed asap. Nice one for posting
