It does what it says on the tin - stops a dumped clutch straining the drive train!

Just a wild guess here but it could be for the air conditioning compressor??

You could remove it and see if the A/C still works or what else doesn't!!

So if you are constantly changing gear, the aircon won't work?!?

No the AC is driven from the accessory drive belt, but it does have its own type of clutch which is used when you turn the AC on, to ensure it then gets driven drom the belt.
