Not having peripheral hearing whilst driving is dangerous, in my opinion. Reason why people shouldn't use headphones for music, and should just invest in an £80 head unit that is ipod compatible...

Uncool from looks perspective.

But not dangerous. Hearing is not a legal requirement. Sure hearing helps driving and those with hearing are better for it. But surely deaf people aren't dangerous drivers?

Maybe dangerous is an over zealous word to use use in this context , but anything that reduces information input to the driver should be avoided , like for instance heavily tinted windows.

On thursday in the S going down the M11 i saw and heard an unmarked plod arriving at speed behind , the 2 cars followig me didnt ! they both overtook me after i pulled into lane 2 , both still didnt see plod , they both recieved a wagging finger and dirty looks from the plod in the passenger seat when they finally pulled over! Just proves that lot of people let alone using thier ears do not even use eye balls and mirrors when they drive !

When I go out on the bike, I use ear plugs due to the wind noise.

I have a box of these and they do wonders, otherwise I end up with ringing ears and I quite like my hearing.

They are made by 3M and available basically everywhere.

Many years ago I saw two old men on the A34 through Newbury wearing similar head phones and they looked mega cool, mind you they were driving a Ferrari 250GTO, if you are in an S2000 you will look a giant nobhead.
